Ogun Police Intensify Crackdown on Highway Obstructions
The Ogun State Police Command has issued a firm warning to motorists and traders found guilty of obstructing traffic through illegal parking and unauthorized display of goods on major highways. This crackdown specifically targets the Sango Ota and Sagamu axes, where such activities have been rampant, leading to significant traffic disruptions.
Commissioner of Police CP Bode Ojajuni, in a statement delivered by Police Public Relations Officer Oluseyi Babaseyi in Abeokuta, emphasized that offenders will be arrested and prosecuted. The decision is part of the intensified Operation No Traffic Gridlock, aimed at ensuring zero tolerance for road obstructions, especially on the Abeokuta-Lagos Expressway and Sagamu-Benin Expressway, which are currently undergoing construction.
Specific Violations Targeted
The police have identified several traffic obstruction activities that will be strictly enforced against. These include:
- Illegal parking and double parking on highways
- Indiscriminate stopping on carriageways
- Loading and offloading passengers in active lanes
- Displaying or selling goods on roads and walkways
CP Ojajuni stated that such conduct is becoming unacceptable and urged all motorists, traders, and public transport operators to desist immediately. He highlighted the need for compliance with traffic regulations to ensure free movement and prevent crashes in key areas like Sango-Ota, Sagamu, and Mowe.
Enhanced Enforcement Measures
To enforce these regulations, the command has deployed personnel from the State Motor Traffic Department, Area Traffic Officers, and Divisional Traffic Officers across strategic locations. This deployment aims to ensure strict enforcement, effective traffic management, and sustained clearance of obstructions.
Motorists are directed to park only at designated areas when picking up or dropping off passengers, while traders must confine their activities to approved market spaces. All road users are expected to cooperate with deployed personnel to reduce traffic obstruction and prevent avoidable road crashes.
Ongoing Road Construction and Public Cooperation
The statement acknowledged ongoing road construction in Sango Ota and Sagamu by the government, which is intended to improve infrastructure and enhance long-term movement. However, CP Ojajuni has directed full enforcement of Operation No Traffic Gridlock, warning that offenders will face legal consequences.
He reaffirmed the command's commitment to maintaining order, safety, and free movement across the state. The public is urged to support the police in eliminating traffic gridlock and to report any suspicious activities through the Ogun State Police Command emergency lines, including the Gateway Shield toll-free number: 0800 000 9111, and other contact numbers: 0906 283 7609, 0912 014 1706, 0915 102 7369, and 0708 497 2994.
