At least 21 people have been confirmed dead following a multi-vehicle collision on the N1 highway in South Africa's Western Cape province, according to the Road Traffic Management Corporation and local authorities. The crash occurred late Sunday night, and the death toll was confirmed on Monday, September 14.
Details of the Fatal Collision
The collision happened around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday along a stretch of road between the towns of Prince Albert and Leeu-Gamka, approximately 380 kilometres east of Cape Town. The incident involved two minibus taxis and a third vehicle, as confirmed by Western Cape Mobility, the provincial transport department.
Muneera Allie, spokesperson for Western Cape Mobility, confirmed the time of the crash. According to the department, investigators believe the two minibus taxis struck each other head-on, and a third vehicle then ploughed into the wreckage. Several survivors were taken away with serious injuries, though the exact number of injured was not immediately disclosed.
