A young Nigerian eyewitness has provided a chilling, first-hand account of the car crash that nearly claimed the life of world-renowned boxer, Anthony Joshua, on the busy Lagos-Ibadan expressway.
Promise's Eyewitness Account: The Moment of Impact
In a video that has gone viral online, a man who identified himself as Promise from Akwa Ibom State stated he was present at the scene of the accident on December 29, 2025, between 10 am and 11 am. He described the initial moments, noting a stationary truck loaded with soya beans was involved.
Promise clarified a critical point about the cause of the collision. He insisted that neither the car carrying Anthony Joshua nor the escort vehicle with him was responsible. According to his testimony, another vehicle, driving at high speed, diverted suddenly. This reckless maneuver triggered the chain of events that led to the boxer's car crashing.
The Harrowing Rescue: 'We Carried Him Out'
The most gripping part of Promise's narrative details the immediate aftermath. He revealed that the two other occupants in Joshua's vehicle, described as white men, died instantly upon impact.
"We tried to stop all the trucks. As the accident happened, immediately, the two white men die instantly," Promise said. He then explained the desperate race to save the boxer, who was still trapped in the wreckage. "If no be God sef, e for don die. Na we like this bring am come outside, na we carry am out inside the car," he stated, emphasizing the role of ordinary bystanders.
Promise stressed that this civilian rescue effort happened long before any security or emergency personnel arrived on the scene. "Before any force, na we was there. If no be we, Anthony Joshua for don die, if no be God sef," he asserted, highlighting how crucial their intervention was.
Public Reaction and Lingering Questions
The eyewitness video sparked significant reactions online, with many Nigerians expressing a mix of relief for Joshua's survival and frustration over systemic issues.
One commenter, Hgrowp, pointed out a disturbing detail from the account: "He said the car that caused the accident kept driving and didn't stop." Another user, Sweetsaloonjellof, summarized the sequence as described: a speeding vehicle forced Joshua's driver to swerve, leading to a collision with the parked truck, after which the offending vehicle fled.
Other reactions turned critical, questioning the state of infrastructure and governance. A user named Kelvin_ejiro commented on the lack of CCTV cameras to capture the truth and criticized government priorities.
While Anthony Joshua has since been treated and discharged from the hospital, the accident has left a sobering mark. Separate reports from others who visited the crash site in Ogun State noted that the road was in good condition and the truck that was hit was properly parked, pointing to overspeeding as the primary cause. This aligns with Promise's account of a speeding vehicle causing the fatal diversion.
The bravery of citizens like Promise, who acted swiftly amidst chaos, ultimately played a pivotal role in preventing a greater tragedy on that fateful December morning.
