Eight Killed, Three Injured in Yobe Head-On Truck Collision on Damaturu-Potiskum Road
Yobe Auto Crash Claims 8 Lives, Injures 3

A devastating head-on collision between two heavy trucks has resulted in the loss of eight lives in Yobe State. The tragic accident, which also left three other individuals with injuries, occurred on the busy Damaturu–Potiskum Road.

Details of the Fatal Collision

The crash involved a Howo truck with the registration number DAL 973 YY and another truck marked NNR 437 XA. It took place at Dogon Kuka village along the Kano–Maiduguri Expressway. The Yobe State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Andrew Longkam, confirmed the incident from Damaturu on Thursday.

According to the preliminary report received by the FRSC, the collision happened at precisely 12:40 pm. The corps' rescue team was promptly dispatched to the scene. They evacuated a total of eleven victims. The eight deceased were taken to the morgue at the Specialist Hospital in Damaturu, while the three injured passengers received treatment at the same facility. One passenger was reported to have escaped unharmed during the rescue operation.

Emergency Response and Road Clearance

Following the immediate rescue efforts, focus shifted to clearing the obstruction on the critical expressway. The FRSC deployed a towing truck to remove the wreckage. This swift action was aimed at preventing secondary accidents on the route.

The Dogon Kuka Police Motor Traffic Division provided crucial assistance in this operation, working to restore the smooth flow of all vehicles and bicycles. Their joint effort with the FRSC helped to quickly mitigate the traffic disruption caused by the severe crash.

Preliminary Findings and Safety Warnings

In his statement, Sector Commander Longkam revealed the initial findings of the investigation. The driver of one of the trucks, a Mitsubishi, is suspected to have been speeding excessively. This loss of control led to the catastrophic impact with the oncoming vehicle.

Longkam directly attributed the cause to "overspeeding and route violation," which he described as bad driving habits prevalent in the state. He emphasized that these reckless behaviors continue to lead to needless loss of life on Nigerian roads.

While investigations are ongoing to pinpoint the exact circumstances, the commander reiterated a urgent call to all motorists. He urged them to:

  • Avoid route violations.
  • Refrain from excessive speeding.
  • Always adhere to traffic regulations.

Longkam reaffirmed the FRSC's commitment to its mandate of ensuring safer roads for all. This commitment is demonstrated through prompt emergency responses and sustained public education campaigns designed to drastically reduce auto crashes in Yobe State and across Nigeria.
