Authorities in Adamawa State have taken the drastic step of suspending all major New Year's Eve crossover celebrations, citing a credible threat of terrorist attacks. The decision, affecting both religious and state-organized events, was announced on January 1, 2026, following a serious security alert from the Department of State Services (DSS).
Security Intelligence Prompts Immediate Action
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Adamawa State was the first to issue the directive, instructing churches and Christian organizations across the state to immediately halt their planned crossover night services. The decision was based on what the association described as "credible intelligence" received from security agencies.
In a statement signed by the state CAN Chairman, Joel Danjuma Manzo, who also serves as President of the Gongola Baptist Conference, the body revealed that the DSS had issued a warning about a planned attempt by suspected terrorists to cause havoc. The alert specifically mentioned Yola, the state capital, and other parts of Adamawa, as potential targets during the crossover night celebrations.
Church Leaders Urged to Prioritize Safety
Reverend Manzo's statement was unequivocal in its call for caution. He urged all church leaders to treat the security advisory with the utmost seriousness and to promptly inform their congregations of the suspension. The CAN chairman emphasized a philosophy of safety over ceremony.
"It is wiser to suspend a crossover service today and, by God's grace, hold many peaceful and joyful crossovers in the years ahead," Manzo stated. "Our priority is to ensure that everyone enters the New Year alive and safe." The association concluded its announcement with prayers for peace and safety for all residents during the subdued transition into the new year.
Government Event Also Cancelled
In a related development that underscored the severity of the threat, the Adamawa State Government under Governor Ahmadu Fintiri also announced the cancellation of its official New Year crossover event. This state-sponsored celebration traditionally attracts large crowds to Yola and often features performances by popular Nigerian music stars.
The simultaneous suspension of both religious and government-organized events highlights the heightened security concerns in Adamawa State. The region continues to grapple with the persistent threats posed by insurgency and terrorism, requiring constant vigilance from both security forces and the civilian population.
The collective action by CAN and the state government represents a proactive measure aimed at preventing potential loss of life, directing the public towards a more cautious and secure observance of the New Year.
