A Boko Haram fighter has surrendered to Nigerian troops in Borno State, bringing with him an AK-47 rifle and 26 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, military sources confirmed on Monday.
Surrender Occurs in Borno Theatre of Operations
The surrender took place in the ongoing counter-insurgency operations in the North East, where troops have been conducting clearance operations against Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists. The fighter, whose identity has not been disclosed, turned himself in at a military location in Borno State, according to a statement from the Nigerian Army.
The military reported that the surrendered fighter handed over the weapon and ammunition without any resistance. The AK-47 rifle is a standard-issue assault weapon widely used by insurgent groups in the region.
Military Encourages Surrender as Part of Counter-Insurgency Strategy
The Nigerian Army has repeatedly called on Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters to lay down their arms and surrender, emphasizing that those who do so will be treated humanely and reintegrated into society. The military has intensified its operations in the North East, targeting terrorist hideouts and logistics bases.
According to the military source, the surrendered fighter is currently being debriefed and will undergo a rehabilitation program as part of the government's deradicalization efforts. The recovery of the AK-47 and 26 rounds of ammunition is seen as a significant step in reducing the insurgents' combat capability.
Impact on Security Operations in the Region
The surrender is expected to provide valuable intelligence on the locations and activities of remaining Boko Haram cells in Borno State. The Nigerian military has recorded several surrenders in recent months, attributed to sustained pressure from ground troops and air strikes. The military continues to urge other insurgents to follow suit, promising safety and a path to normalcy.
