Chinese Miners Reject Terrorism Funding Claims in Nigeria, Cite Victimhood
Chinese Miners Deny Funding Terrorism in Nigeria

The China Mining Federation of Nigeria has issued a strong rebuttal to accusations that Chinese mining companies are involved in financing terrorist activities within the country's solid minerals sector.

Federation Dismisses Allegations as False and Misleading

In a statement released on Tuesday, 23 December 2025, and communicated via the Embassy of China, the federation labeled the reports as completely unfounded. It argued that the claims of "Chinese infiltration" distort the legitimate operations of these firms and pose a threat to the cooperative relationship between Nigeria and China.

The federation was responding to media reports that implicated some Chinese nationals in illegal mining, environmental degradation, and exacerbating insecurity. "The allegations that Chinese companies are fueling terrorism in Nigeria are completely unfounded", the group stated emphatically.

Commitment to Law and Local Development Stressed

The federation asserted that Chinese mining enterprises in Nigeria strictly adhere to local laws and regulations under the guidance of the Chinese government. It highlighted their collaborative efforts with Nigerian agencies to improve sector governance.

Chinese companies support industrial transformation through investments, local factory setup, and the employment of Nigerian workers, the statement noted. These activities, according to the federation, boost local employment, help Nigeria retain more value from its mineral wealth, and contribute to community development and environmental protection.

Chinese Firms Positioned as Victims of Insecurity

Addressing the core security concerns, the federation presented a counter-narrative. It stressed that Chinese mining operations have themselves suffered from the pervasive insecurity in the country.

"Chinese mining companies in Nigeria have themselves been victims of terrorist activities and have always supported and remain willing to cooperate with the Nigerian government in safeguarding national security", the statement clarified. The federation urged media and stakeholders to report objectively, warning against false information that could harm bilateral ties.

It reaffirmed its commitment to deepening mining cooperation with the Nigerian government to support the nation's socio-economic growth.

Security Experts Sound Alarm on Illegal Mining in the North

In a related development, a coalition of Nigerian security experts has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take immediate steps to curb illegal mining activities, particularly in Zamfara State and other northern regions.

The Arewa Patriotic Neighbourhood Watch (APNW) made the call during a media briefing in Jos, Plateau State, following a one-day security retreat. The group identified illegal mining as a major enabler of banditry and insecurity.

APNW Convener, Dr. Danlami Shehu, explained that the illicit trade provides a steady revenue stream for armed groups. He noted that bandits often provide protection for illegal mining sites, which in turn hinders security agencies from accessing these areas and dismantling criminal networks. The group's statement also hinted at the involvement of high-profile individuals, urging authorities to review such cases.
