The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has directed senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force to implement more proactive, intelligence-driven, and adaptive policing strategies to address the country's evolving security challenges. This directive was issued during the monthly conference of strategic senior officers held on Tuesday at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Peacekeeping Centre, Force Headquarters, Abuja.
Conference Highlights and Key Threats
The meeting brought together Deputy Inspectors-General of Police, Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, Commissioners of Police, and other senior officers to review the nation's security situation and evaluate ongoing policing operations. Addressing the gathering, the IGP identified kidnapping, armed robbery, cult-related violence, terrorism, banditry, farmer-herder clashes, and cyber-enabled crimes as major threats that require coordinated and sustained responses.
Emphasis on Leadership and Intelligence
Disu stressed the need for stronger leadership, enhanced intelligence gathering, and improved operational coordination to ensure the Force remains ahead of criminal elements and emerging security threats. He highlighted recent achievements, disclosing that the police have arrested eight suspected terrorists, 55 kidnapping suspects, 65 armed robbery suspects, 29 murder suspects, and 42 suspected cultists since the last strategic conference in May 2026.
Rescue Operations and Recoveries
The IGP further revealed that 88 kidnapped victims were rescued during various operations nationwide, while officers recovered 114 firearms, 843 rounds of ammunition, and 28 stolen vehicles. These accomplishments underscore the Force's commitment to combating crime and enhancing public safety.
Community Policing and Stakeholder Engagement
The Inspector-General directed Commissioners of Police across the country to deepen community policing efforts and strengthen engagements with traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth groups, market associations, transport unions, and other key stakeholders. According to him, public trust, intelligence sharing, and community partnership remain critical tools in preventing crime and enhancing public safety.
Professionalism and Accountability
The IGP also reiterated the Force's commitment to professionalism and accountability, urging senior officers to uphold discipline, prioritize personnel welfare, and ensure strict compliance with operational procedures. He further emphasized the importance of effective media engagement to improve public understanding of policing activities and counter the spread of misinformation.
Further details are expected as the Police Force rolls out additional security measures and operational strategies nationwide.
