Iran has fired multiple missiles at Israel, significantly escalating the three-month-long regional conflict that has already claimed thousands of lives across the Middle East. The missiles targeted Israel's Ramat David Air Base, located approximately 20 kilometers from the northern city of Haifa.
Attack Details
The strikes occurred hours after Israel launched missile attacks on the Dahieh district in southern Lebanon, which Tehran considers a violation of the fragile ceasefire agreement. At least two people were killed and 20 wounded in the attacks on the Beirut suburb, according to Lebanon's Health Ministry.
IRGC Statement
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated that Israel had crossed "all red lines" by targeting the southern suburbs of Beirut and intensifying attacks across southern Lebanon. The IRGC also warned of a broader response if aggressions continue, accusing the US and Israel of failing to meet their commitments under the ceasefire by repeatedly attacking Iranian shores and vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, the Sea of Oman, and the Indian Ocean.
"Tonight's operation was a warning; if aggressions are repeated, the responses will be broader," the IRGC said, according to Al Jazeera.
Background
Iran has repeatedly warned that Israeli attacks on Lebanon violate the ceasefire that halted the war launched by the US and Israel against Iran. Hezbollah in Lebanon had joined the war on Iran's behalf. Despite international calls for restraint from Pope Leo, France, and the EU, Israel continued its attacks on Lebanon, insisting its goal is to decimate Hezbollah and eliminate the threat to Israel.
Last week, Iran warned it would attack Israel if attacks on Lebanon continued. Sunday's strike marks the first time Iran has launched an attack against Israel since the April ceasefire agreement, although the US and Iran exchanged missile strikes last week. Premium Times reported that Iran's strike last week, in retaliation for the US attack on Qeshm Island, targeted Kuwait, killing one Indian national and injuring about 60 others.
Airspace Closure
According to the state news agency Tasnim, Iran has closed the western part of its airspace until further notice.
US Response
US President Donald Trump urged Iran to return to negotiations, stating, "What I would suggest to Iran: You've shot your missiles; that's enough. Get back to the table and make a deal." Peace talks between the two countries have stalled due to disagreements over Iran's uranium enrichment and control over the Strait of Hormuz. Last month, Iran and the US announced a preliminary agreement to halt hostilities, but neither side has formally approved or signed the deal.
This attack comes amid concerns that Israel's expanding campaign in Lebanon could affect the US-Iran ceasefire. Last week, Israel attacked the Tyre district of southern Lebanon, killing six people and leaving at least 48 others injured. President Trump expressed perturbation over Israel's military plans in Lebanon during negotiations, saying, "I wouldn't say angry. I was a little bit perturbed at his constant fighting with Lebanon... at some point I said, 'Bibi, we got to stop this.'"
