Nigeria's National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, has declared with firm conviction that the nation will overcome the severe security challenges that have plagued it for nearly three decades. He identified these challenges as terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other violent crimes.
Ribadu's Firm Stance Against 'Evil' Actors
Speaking at a one-day dialogue in Abuja on Thursday, December 4, 2025, Ribadu described the perpetrators behind the nation's insecurity as "evil." He assured Nigerians that these elements would be decisively defeated. The event, titled "A whole-of-Society Approach to the Prevention of Violence and Conflict in Northern Nigeria," was organized by the National Peace Committee in partnership with the European Union and United States delegations to Nigeria.
"This (security challenges) also shall pass. We are going through tough times. This will also go," Ribadu stated. He acknowledged the profound pain caused by the violence, labeling it "unnecessary" and "unfair." The NSA vowed that the government would never surrender in its fight, emphasizing the silent sacrifices made by security forces and citizens daily.
The 'Whole-of-Society' Strategy and Recorded Gains
Ribadu stressed that achieving lasting peace requires more than just government action. He called for active engagement from all sectors of society, including traditional and religious leaders, civil society, youth and women's groups, the private sector, and international partners. This collaborative framework is the core of the "whole-of-society" approach championed by the dialogue.
Outlining tangible progress, Ribadu revealed that terrorism-related prosecutions have so far secured over 775 convictions, strengthening the rule of law. He also reported that thousands of farmers are returning to their lands, while many insurgents are voluntarily surrendering to undergo rehabilitation and reintegration programs.
"Communities that previously disrupted government interventions are now cooperating actively," he noted, highlighting improved information sharing and participation in early-warning systems.
Aligning with Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda
The National Security Adviser affirmed that his office is fully committed to the principles of President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda. This agenda focuses on inclusion, accountability, and institutional strengthening. In line with this, Ribadu has directed the National Counter-terrorism Centre to intensify its prevention programs, ensuring they are community-centred and intelligence-driven.
He issued a stern warning to non-state actors: "Any individual or group seeking to exploit communities, exploit terror or undermine national unity will face decisive, coordinated and uncompromising actions."
Ribadu concluded by commending the National Peace Committee for its role since 2014 in championing peaceful coexistence and facilitating crucial dialogue. He positioned Nigeria as a democratic bastion in the troubled Sahel region, noting that many neighboring countries have lost their democracies to terrorism and instability.
