Shettima condemns Maiduguri mosque bombing, Tinubu acts

Vice President Kashim Shettima has issued a strong condemnation of a bomb explosion that killed at least five people and injured several others at a mosque in Maiduguri, Borno State. The attack, which occurred on Wednesday evening, has been described as a despicable assault on innocent citizens and national peace.

Details of the Gamboru Market Attack

The tragic incident took place at a mosque within the bustling Gamboru Market in Maiduguri. According to reports, the blast happened around 6:10 p.m. on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, during congregational prayers. This is a time when many traders from the market typically gather to worship.

Eyewitness accounts paint a harrowing picture. Muhammad Abdullahi, who was present, confirmed the explosion disrupted prayers. Another witness, Bukar Wakil, reported that the blast triggered a fire and thick smoke, burning parts of the mosque's ceiling and causing widespread panic in the crowded market area.

Although official details were initially limited, residents pointed fingers at suspected Boko Haram insurgents, believing an improvised explosive device (IED) was detonated inside the place of worship.

Government Response and Security Orders

In a swift response, Vice President Shettima, through a statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communication, Stanley Nwokeocha, revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered an immediate intensification of security operations in Borno State.

The Federal Government is deploying additional tactical teams to the area with the mandate to track down and apprehend those responsible for this act of terror. Shettima affirmed the government's unwavering commitment, stating, "This commitment remains steadfast under God and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. We will continue to provide our security agencies with all necessary resources and support to decisively defeat terrorism in all its forms."

He further added that collaboration is ongoing with state authorities and local security agencies to enhance the protection of vulnerable communities and critical infrastructure, not just in the North East but across other regions of the country.

Impact and Heightened Tensions

The bombing has significantly heightened fear among residents of Maiduguri. The timing is particularly sensitive, causing deep anxiety within the Christian community as they prepare for the 2025 Christmas celebration.

The attack on a central place of worship in a major market underscores the persistent security challenges in the region and the brutal tactics employed by terrorist groups to undermine peace and sow discord.

The government's pledge of increased security deployment aims to reassure citizens and prevent further attacks, especially during the festive period.
