President Donald Trump has announced that the United States will begin escorting foreign ships through the Strait of Hormuz starting Monday, describing the initiative as a humanitarian gesture. He warned that any attempt by Iran to disrupt the operation would be met with force.
Project Freedom Launch
Trump revealed the campaign, dubbed Project Freedom, on Sunday, stating that it comes at the request of countries whose vessels are currently stranded in the strait. He referred to these nations as neutral and innocent bystanders. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said, For the good of Iran, the Middle East, and the United States, we have told these Countries that we will guide their Ships safely out of these restricted Waterways, so that they can freely and ably get on with their business. He did not specify which countries requested assistance.
Trump emphasized the dire conditions on board many of these ships, noting that they are running low on food and other essentials necessary for large crews to remain onboard in a healthy and sanitary manner. He added that any interference in the operation would unfortunately have to be dealt with forcefully.
Uncertain Implementation
It remains unclear how the initiative will be carried out or whether it has been coordinated with Tehran. If Iran opposes the plan, it could jeopardize the fragile ceasefire that took effect on April 7. Following Trump’s announcement, Ebrahim Azizi, head of the Iranian parliament’s National Security Commission, warned that any American interference in the strait would be considered a breach of the truce. He posted on X, The Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf would not be managed by Trump’s delusional posts! No one would believe Blame Game scenarios!
US Central Command Statement
US Central Command (CENTCOM) issued a statement confirming that it would begin supporting merchant vessels seeking to freely transit the strait from Monday. CENTCOM Commander Admiral Brad Cooper said, Our support for this defensive mission is essential to regional security and the global economy as we also maintain the naval blockade.
