UN Demands Probe into Nigeria, Chad Airstrikes Deaths

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has called for independent investigations into reports that Nigerian airstrikes on a market killed at least 100 civilians, while Chadian airstrikes in Nigeria reportedly claimed the lives of dozens of fishermen.

“It is crucial that both Nigerian and Chadian authorities conduct prompt, thorough, independent and impartial investigations into these disturbing incidents and ensure that those responsible for any violations are held to account, in accordance with international standards,” Türk said in a statement issued on Wednesday.

The UN rights chief expressed deep concern over the loss of civilian lives and urged both governments to take immediate steps to prevent further harm. He emphasized the need for accountability and adherence to international humanitarian law, which requires parties to conflicts to distinguish between civilians and combatants.

According to reports, the Nigerian airstrike targeted a bustling market in the northeastern region, resulting in mass casualties. Meanwhile, the Chadian airstrikes struck areas within Nigerian territory, killing fishermen who were going about their daily activities. The incidents have sparked outrage and calls for justice from local communities and human rights organizations.

Türk reiterated the UN's readiness to provide technical assistance for the investigations if requested. He also called on all parties to exercise restraint and prioritize the protection of civilians in military operations.
