Bayelsa Governor Diri Launches State as Sports and Youth Development Hub with 10km International Race
Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has declared the state's readiness to host a major 10km international road race on Saturday, April 4, 2026, as part of a strategic initiative to reposition Bayelsa as a premier center for sports, youth development, and healthy living.
Event Details and Global Participation
The race will commence from the Opolo Roundabout and conclude at the Peace Park in Yenagoa, the state capital. It is expected to feature no fewer than 2,000 marathoners from across Africa and beyond, drawing significant international attention to the region.
A delegation from World Athletics, led by Mr. Nadeem Khan, is already present in Bayelsa to oversee the event. Khan, who also serves as President of the International Association of Ultrarunners, emphasized the global significance of the race, noting that it will place Bayelsa on the World Athletics calendar.
Governor Diri's Vision for Sports and Youth Empowerment
At a world press conference in Yenagoa, Governor Diri, represented by the Commissioner for Sports, Daniel Igali, outlined his administration's commitment to leveraging sports as a tool for economic stimulation and youth engagement. He described the event as historic and urged all residents to participate, highlighting that it transcends mere competition to foster community spirit and a healthier lifestyle.
"The Bayelsa State government under my leadership is positioning sports and youth development as well as promoting healthy living through hosting sporting events," Diri stated. "We are inviting residents, visitors, and the media to be part of this historic moment. The race is not just about the competition but it is also about community, healthy living, and the future of sports in Bayelsa."
Government Investments and Security Measures
The Commissioner for Information, Orientation and Strategy, Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai, reinforced the government's focus on sports development as a key policy for youth empowerment. She noted substantial investments in the sub-sector, including recent marathon events, and assured participants of enhanced security measures to ensure a peaceful atmosphere.
"We concluded another marathon race a few weeks ago in the state, and for us as a government, sports and youth development is a priority," Koku-Obiyai said. "This race attracts athletes from different parts of the world and will encourage our youths and others. I believe that this is one of the ways government can encourage young people to develop themselves."
Prizes and Event Structure
Nadeem Khan announced the prize structure for the race, with winners receiving cash awards:
- First place: $5,000
- Second place: $3,000
- Third place: $2,000
- Fourth place: $1,000
- Fifth place: $500
He also clarified that while Nigeria has elite marathoners, none currently qualify for the elite category, which requires being among the top 300 globally.
Support and Endorsements
First Vice President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, Chief Solomon Ogba, praised the state government for hosting the international event, calling it historic and commending its efforts to empower youth through sports. He encouraged broader participation in the Olympic movement.
Mrs. Yetunde Olopade, Managing Director of Nilayo Sports Management Limited, the event organizers, expressed gratitude to Governor Diri and sponsors for their support. She detailed that the race is structured into three categories to ensure fairness and competitiveness, with technical and medical teams deployed along the route for participant safety.
"This groundbreaking event will launch Bayelsa into the global stage of athletes," Olopade remarked.
Preparations for Future Events
The 10km race is seen as a precursor to larger international competitions, with Bayelsa preparing to host the 2028 National Sports Festival. The event's highlight included the presentation of race kits to Governor Diri at his country home in Sampou, Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Council, symbolizing the state's dedication to sports excellence.
Through this initiative, Bayelsa aims to not only boost its local economy but also establish itself as a thriving hub for athletic talent and youth development on the global map.
