The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) has announced the postponement of the 2026 Olympic Day celebration, moving the nationwide event from June 27 to July 4. The decision was reached during an emergency meeting of the NOC's Sport-for-All Commission held on June 6, as disclosed in an official statement.
Reason for Postponement
Organizers explained that the one-week shift will give participating states additional time to finalize their preparations, ensuring smooth coordination of activities without conflicts with other commitments and logistical issues. Olympic Day is an annual global initiative by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) designed to promote physical activity and healthy living through non-competitive sports. The event is celebrated worldwide to encourage mass participation in sports and raise awareness about the Olympic values of excellence, friendship, and respect.
Chairman's Remarks
During the meeting, Abdul Ibrahim, Chairman of the NOC Sport-for-All Commission, acknowledged the economic challenges facing organizers and stakeholders but urged members to remain dedicated to delivering a successful event. "You have always strived to achieve the best, and this year's event should not be an exception," Mr. Ibrahim stated. He also praised the leadership of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, led by Habu Gumel, for its continued support in organizing the annual celebration.
Participating States
According to the commission, at least 18 states have indicated interest in hosting this year's event. These include Delta, Bayelsa, Ondo, Edo, Akwa Ibom, Jigawa, Gombe, Plateau, Taraba, Oyo, Anambra, Zamfara, Imo, Yobe, Kogi, Sokoto, and Adamawa, as well as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Organizers expect more states to join in the coming weeks.
Call for Support
The NOC has called on corporate organizations, philanthropists, and the public to support the initiative, describing Olympic Day as an opportunity to promote national unity, encourage healthy living, and bridge generational divides through sports. The committee also appealed for sponsorship and donations to ensure the successful staging of the event across participating states.
