Semi Ajayi Eyes Premier League Return, Dismisses Injury Exit Claims
Ajayi: Injury Not Behind My West Brom Exit

Super Eagles defender Semi Ajayi has set his sights on a return to the English Premier League while firmly rejecting suggestions that injury problems led to his departure from West Bromwich Albion.

Clarifying the Exit from The Hawthorns

In a candid interview with the UK sports website SportsBoom, the Nigerian international, whose full name is Oluwasemilore Ajayi, addressed the circumstances of his summer move. Ajayi spent six seasons at West Brom, becoming a fan favourite known as 'Semi' and making a significant 170 league appearances for the club. He was instrumental in their promotion to the Premier League in the 2019-20 season.

The 32-year-old defender left The Hawthorns upon the expiry of his contract last summer, officially joining Hull City on a two-year deal on July 1, 2025. While fitness issues limited him to just 15 league games in the 2024/25 campaign, Ajayi insists this was not the reason for his exit. "No," he stated emphatically to SportsBoom, rejecting the injury narrative. "I joined Hull City because I like the project."

Belief in Hull City's Ambition

Ajayi explained that his decision was driven by a firm belief in the long-term vision presented by the Championship side. Having experienced the thrill of promotion with West Brom and making 33 top-flight appearances the following season, he sees similar potential at Hull.

"I bought into the idea because we have better chances of winning promotion back to the Premier League," Ajayi said. "As you see, we are doing well and fighting to give ourselves a chance." His confidence is bolstered by his recent experience; last season, he helped West Brom reach the Championship play-offs, though they ultimately fell short of promotion.

Focused on the Promotion Push

Since his arrival, Ajayi has quickly become a key figure for Hull City, who currently sit in seventh place in the Championship table. The team is four points clear of the chasing pack and just four points away from the automatic promotion spots.

The defender's contribution has been immediate: 12 starts, three substitute appearances, one goal, and 867 minutes of action. His focus remains squarely on the team's objective. "My target is to play as many games as possible and help my teammates to achieve our objectives," he affirmed.

Ajayi concluded with a clear statement of intent, linking his personal aspirations with the club's goal. "Obviously, it’s a dream to return to the Premier League. It’s not going to be easy, but we can achieve it." For now, the experienced Super Eagle is fully committed to the Tigers' fight for a top-flight return.
