Blatter Warns FIFA Against Compromising Football's Universality
Blatter: FIFA Must Not Compromise Football Universality

Former FIFA President Sepp Blatter has cautioned the world football governing body against compromising the universality of the sport. In a post on his official X account on Saturday, Blatter emphasized that host countries of the 2026 World Cup—the United States, Canada, and Mexico—must ensure safety and unrestricted entry for all qualified officials.

Blatter's Warning

Blatter cited the denial of Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan as a violation of football's universality. Artan, the Confederation of African Football (CAF)'s top referee in 2025 and the first Somali selected for a World Cup, was turned away at Miami Airport despite holding valid documents and FIFA credentials. The denial was reportedly due to unspecified US vetting and security concerns, leading to his removal from the tournament.

Blatter stated: “A FIFA World Cup host country must guarantee two fundamental principles: the safety of the country — and the unrestricted entry of all qualified teams, officials and referees. The case of referee Omar Artan from Somalia is against one of these obligations. FIFA must never compromise the universality of football.”
