Brentford defender Michael Kayode has made a definitive decision regarding his international future, ending speculation about representing Nigeria or Italy at senior level. The 21-year-old, born in Italy to Yoruba parents, has chosen to pledge his allegiance to the Azzurri.
Kayode's Commitment to Italy
According to reports from Tuttosport, Kayode stated that his heart remains with Italy despite interest from the Super Eagles. He reminded the Italian Football Federation of his long-standing commitment, having played for Italy at youth levels. 'I will always give priority to Italy. Even at youth level, I grew up wearing the Azzurri shirt. I hope to achieve this dream as soon as possible, but I have no doubt about which path to choose,' he said.
The former Fiorentina player also revealed a brief conversation with former Italy coach Gennaro Gattuso before the World Cup playoffs in March. Despite attending a dinner with other Italian Premier League players, he was not called up. 'Yes, we also had dinner with other Italian Premier League players. I was doing well and I felt involved even without being called up for the playoffs. Wearing the Azzurri shirt would be an enormous achievement, something unimaginable a few years ago, but I'll think about it again in a few weeks,' Kayode added.
Nigeria's Interest and World Cup Context
Both the Super Eagles and the Azzurri failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Kayode's omission from Italy's squad for the playoffs opened the door for Nigeria, who were keen to secure his services ahead of the 2026 Unity Cup in Charlton. However, the defender's decision solidifies his future with Italy.
Kayode has made 36 appearances for Brentford this season, impressing with consistency and versatility. His performances have helped the club on the verge of qualifying for a major European competition for the first time in their history.
Advice from Nigerian Journalist
Nigerian sports journalist Olubunmi Adedoyin advised Kayode to learn from the experiences of dual-nationality players like John Fashanu and Gabriel Agbonlahor, who chose other countries over Nigeria. 'Michael Kayode has the opportunity to cement his place in Eric Chelle's squad now because Nigeria are seriously interested in him. I hope he learns from the experiences of previous dual-nationality players who turned down Nigeria, because things did not end well for many of them,' Adedoyin said.
Meanwhile, Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle is reportedly interested in Arsenal's Ethan Nwaneri, hoping the England U-17 star will choose Nigeria. Kayode's decision marks a significant moment in the ongoing battle for dual-nationality players between Nigeria and Italy.
