AFCON 2025: Eric Chelle Names Unchanged Super Eagles XI for Algeria Clash
Chelle Sticks with Unchanged XI for Algeria Quarter-final

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has made a bold statement of faith in his squad, naming an unchanged starting eleven for Nigeria's high-stakes quarter-final clash against Algeria at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. The decision comes on the heels of a dominant 4-0 victory over Mozambique in the Round of 16.

Unchanged Lineup Defies Controversy

Chelle's selection means he will deploy the exact same lineup that convincingly thrashed the Mambas of Mozambique in Fez. This includes starting star striker Victor Osimhen, despite recent calls from some quarters of the Nigerian fanbase for him to be sanctioned following a reported on-field bust-up with teammate Ademola Lookman during the previous match.

The coach has clearly decided that consistency and momentum outweigh the external noise. The attacking trio of Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, and Akor Adams, which wreaked havoc against Mozambique, will be tasked with unlocking the Algerian defence once more.

Key Players Walking a Tightrope

The selected team carries a significant risk, however. Three key midfielders—captain Wilfred Ndidi, Calvin Bassey, and Frank Onyeka—are all one yellow card away from suspension. A booking against Algeria would rule them out of a potential semi-final, adding an extra layer of tension to the encounter.

In goal, Stanley Nwabali retains his place, shielded by a defensive line of Bright Osayi-Samuel, Semi Ajayi, and Bruno Onyemaechi. Alex Iwobi completes the midfield setup, aiming to control the tempo against the Desert Foxes.

Historic Rivalry Renewed in Marrakech

The match represents the latest chapter in a 55-year historic rivalry between the two footballing nations, which has produced several classic encounters, including at the AFCON as recently as 2019. Both teams have relocated to Marrakech for this last-eight tie, with Algeria moving from Rabat and Nigeria from Fes.

Algeria secured their quarter-final spot with a tense, late 1-0 win over the Leopards of DR Congo, courtesy of a strike from Adil Boulbina. Their coach, Vladimir Petkovic, has previously expressed confidence in his team's ability to stop the Super Eagles.

Nigerian fans can catch the action live on SuperSport channels via DStv and associated streaming platforms. With a semi-final berth on the line, Chelle's unwavering faith in his chosen men will be put to the ultimate test against a formidable Algerian side.
