Anthony Joshua Shares Emotional Mother's Day Dance with Families of Friends Killed in Nigerian Car Crash
World-renowned boxer Anthony Joshua fulfilled a heartfelt promise by spending Mother's Day with the grieving families of his two close friends, Sina Ghami and Latif 'Latz' Ayodele, who tragically lost their lives in a car accident while traveling with him in Nigeria. The emotional gathering served as a poignant tribute to his late "brothers" and a celebration of maternal bonds.
A Tragic Accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway
The devastating incident occurred on Monday, December 29, 2025, along the busy Lagos-Ibadan expressway at approximately 11:00 AM. Joshua, then 36 years old, was involved in the crash that claimed the lives of his two companions. While the boxer escaped with minor injuries and was hospitalized before being released on New Year's Day, his friends were not as fortunate.
The driver of the vehicle, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, has since faced legal proceedings, charged with multiple offenses including causing death by dangerous driving, reckless and negligent driving, operating a vehicle without due care, and driving without a valid license. Since the accident, Joshua has maintained a relatively low public profile, focusing on recovery and supporting the affected families.
A Touching Mother's Day Celebration
Over the weekend, Joshua emerged from his period of mourning to participate in a special Mother's Day celebration that included both his own family and the families of Sina and Latz. A heartfelt video from the event captured the boxer dancing and sharing lighthearted moments on the dancefloor with loved ones of his deceased friends, showcasing a blend of joy and remembrance.
During the gathering, Joshua took a solemn moment to honor his fallen companions, expressing that his "heart" remains with them. "I thank God that we can come under one roof and celebrate our mothers, celebrate our brothers, celebrate those that are not with us, celebrate those that are with us, knowing that our fate will one day come," Joshua stated, visibly holding back tears.
He continued, "We just stay strong until that day. We pray for our transition and just to be great in the afterlife. Why I talk about that is because my heart is for my bros right now." The boxer emphasized the interconnectedness of their families, dedicating the celebration to his mother, Sina's mother, and Latz's mother alike.
Gratitude for Years of Friendship and Protection
In a particularly moving segment of his speech, Joshua expressed deep gratitude to the mothers of Sina and Latz for providing him with trusted allies who accompanied him on global travels for many years. "This is for my mum and our family but also Sina and Latz, Sina’s mum, Latz’s mum, it’s all interconnected," he explained.
Joshua added, "I’m not making too much sense, I’m just speaking from my heart basically. So thank you mums for giving me Latz and Sina for so many years, looking over me, I appreciate it a lot and thank you very much." His words underscored the profound impact these friendships had on his life and career.
The event, shared on social media by user Cleverly, highlighted the bittersweet nature of the celebration, with captions noting that while Joshua smiled outwardly, he carried inner sorrow. The post concluded with well-wishes for his protection and healing, reflecting widespread public sympathy for the boxer's loss.
