Manchester United have officially confirmed the appointment of Michael Carrick as the club's permanent head coach, bringing an end to months of uncertainty over the managerial position at Old Trafford. The 44-year-old former midfielder, who had been serving on an interim basis since January, has signed a multi-year contract that is understood to run for two years, with an option for an additional 12 months.
Carrick's Interim Success
Carrick stepped into the role following the departure of Ruben Amorim earlier this year and has overseen a notable resurgence in the club's performance. Under his guidance, Manchester United have secured 10 victories in their last 15 matches across all competitions, clinched a spot in next season's UEFA Champions League, and climbed to third place in the Premier League standings.
The club's chief executive, Omar Berrada, and director of football, Jason Wilcox, are reported to have recommended Carrick for the permanent position, with co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe giving his approval after negotiations advanced this week.
“Michael has earned this opportunity. He understands the club, the players respect him, and the results speak for themselves,” a source close to the club told AFP.
Playing Career and Coaching Background
Carrick enjoyed a distinguished playing career at Manchester United, making 463 appearances and winning numerous major honours, including the UEFA Champions League and multiple Premier League titles. After retiring from professional football, he managed Middlesbrough before returning to United's coaching staff.
Club captain Bruno Fernandes is among the senior players who have publicly backed Carrick's appointment. Assistants including Jonathan Woodgate are expected to remain part of the coaching setup.
New Era at Old Trafford
This decision marks another managerial change for Manchester United since the retirement of legendary manager Alex Ferguson in 2013. Carrick expressed his enthusiasm about taking charge permanently.
“This club means everything to me. We have momentum now, and I can't wait to build on it with the players and staff,” Carrick said.
Manchester United are set to face Nottingham Forest on Sunday as preparations continue for the upcoming season.
