Enzo Maresca's tenure as Manchester City manager began with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Bournemouth at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, as his side recovered from a first-half deficit to secure all three points in their opening Premier League fixture.
The Italian, who replaced the long-serving Pep Guardiola in the summer, watched his new team struggle early on. Marcus Tavernier gave the Cherries the lead in the first half, and City appeared to be heading for a repeat of last season's damaging home defeat against the same opposition.
Cherki's Impact Off the Bench Turns the Tide
As noted by ESPN, French attacker Rayan Cherki proved to be the decisive influence after being introduced as a substitute just after the hour mark. His introduction was initially questioned by some fans, but he quickly silenced the doubters.
Cherki provided the assist for Marc Guehi to equalise, before setting up Josko Gvardiol for the winning goal. That brace of assists secured the three points and spared Maresca what would have been a damaging home defeat in his first Premier League appearance as City boss.
Maresca's Emotional Reaction and Tactical Experiment
Speaking to MCFC TV after the final whistle, Maresca described the occasion as deeply satisfying, despite the anxiety of the afternoon.
"It's the perfect day, to be honest. I was very pleased when the game started and to see the banner on the other side," he said. "I was glad when it was over also, to give them the joy of the three points. It was quite emotional and the perfect day."
One of the most notable aspects of Maresca's approach was his decision to deploy Guehi, primarily a centre-back, in a midfield role. The City manager acknowledged the unconventional selection, framing it as part of a broader process of experimentation.
"This is a work in progress; that's why I'm looking for new solutions like Guéhi as a midfielder," he explained.
Next Challenge and Title Race Projections
Manchester City's next assignment takes them to the capital, where they will face Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. The result keeps City in touch with the early pacesetters, while the performance will give Maresca plenty to work on in training.
