He then added two more goals in the 39th minute and second-half injury time against Austria to take sole possession of the record. From penalty miss to historic achievement
Despite the historic achievement, Messi had a difficult start to the match. He missed a penalty inside the first 10 minutes, skewing his attempt wide of the right-hand post. He also missed several other chances before finally finding the net. The brace took his tally to five goals in the 2026 World Cup, keeping Argentina on track to defend their title.

The defending champions secured their place in the round of 32 with the victory over Austria. Messi has at least one more guaranteed game to extend his lead at the top of the scoring charts. Argentina face Jordan next on Sunday, June 28, in their final Group J match.
Mbappe closing in on Klose
Klose, who scored his last World Cup goal in the famous 7-1 semi-final win over Brazil in 2014, could be pushed further down the all-time list. Kylian Mbappe currently has 14 World Cup goals, just two behind Klose's former record, and is also competing at the 2026 tournament.
