CAF President Pledges to Uphold CAS Verdict on Controversial AFCON Title
Patrice Motsepe, the President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), has made a firm commitment to respect the forthcoming decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) regarding the highly disputed 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title. This pledge comes in the wake of a contentious ruling by CAF's own Appeal Committee, which controversially awarded the championship to Morocco, overturning Senegal's initial victory.
Motsepe's Statement During Senegal Visit
Motsepe disclosed this stance on Wednesday, April 9, during a diplomatic visit to Senegal. This visit occurred precisely 22 days after the historic and polarizing decision to strip the Teranga Lions of their hard-fought triumph in the 2025 AFCON final and declare Morocco the winner instead. The CAF President emphasized that all challenges and disputes stemming from the final have been formally referred to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, and CAF will fully respect and implement whatever verdict the independent body delivers.
Background of the AFCON Title Controversy
The Confederation of African Football announced on March 17 its decision to crown Morocco as champions, a move that came two months after the tournament's acrimonious conclusion. This decision was based on stripping Senegal of their title due to the team leaving the pitch during the final match. Consequently, CAF's Appeals Committee awarded Morocco a 3-0 victory, despite the fact that Morocco had actually lost the match on the pitch with a scoreline of 1-0. The committee justified this by citing the Teranga Lions' players' withdrawal from the field as grounds for the reversal.
Senegal's Reaction and Legal Appeal
CAF's unprecedented decision ignited fierce reactions across Senegal. The Senegalese government, in an official statement released on March 18, called for an international investigation into what it described as "suspicions of corruption within the leading bodies" of the African football confederation. In response, the Senegalese Football Federation promptly filed a formal appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport, seeking to overturn the ruling and reclaim the title.
Motsepe's Diplomatic Mission and Future Focus
During his visit, Motsepe stated that his trip to Senegal was driven by a strong and sincere commitment to working closely with the nation's football leadership, including the president, the government, and the people. He stressed that these contentious matters are now in the past, with CAF's current priority firmly focused on developing football across all member nations and strengthening the beautiful game throughout the African continent. The CAF President is expected to deliver an identical message during his subsequent visit to Morocco on the same day, April 9. This visit is widely believed to be a diplomatic mission aimed at calming the heightened tensions and heated atmosphere surrounding the ongoing legal battle over the 2025 AFCON title.
