Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu has revealed that Nigeria's absence from the 2026 FIFA World Cup continues to cause him great pain. Speaking ahead of Nigeria's friendly match against Poland on Wednesday, Onuachu lamented the team's failure to secure one of Africa's ten spots for the tournament, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Onuachu's Heartfelt Reaction
“It is sad that we are not going to the World Cup,” Onuachu said. “We have good players, great players, world-class players, but unfortunately we are not going. That is football.” The 31-year-old forward, who plays for Turkish club Trabzonspor, acknowledged that this might have been his last opportunity to feature on football's biggest stage.
Uncertain Future for Senior Players
With Nigeria's rich pool of emerging talents, there is no guarantee that Onuachu will be part of the squad for the next World Cup in 2030. This makes the 2026 disappointment even more bitter for him and other senior Super Eagles players who may never get another chance to play in the tournament.
Strong Season with Trabzonspor
Onuachu had an impressive 2025-2026 season with Trabzonspor, finishing third in the Turkish Süper Lig behind Victor Osimhen's Galatasaray and Fenerbahce. Despite his individual success, the World Cup absence remains a heavy burden on his mind.
The Super Eagles, once again, failed to live up to expectations despite boasting some of Africa's finest talents. Onuachu's comments reflect the collective disappointment of a nation that had hoped to shine on the global stage.
