Wayne Rooney Blasts CAF's Controversial AFCON 2025 Decision
Former England captain and Manchester United legend, Wayne Rooney, has launched a scathing criticism of the Confederation of African Football's (CAF) recent verdict regarding the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations hosting rights. Rooney expressed strong disapproval after CAF's Appeal Board overturned Senegal's 1–0 victory over Morocco, awarding the tournament to Morocco instead.
CAF's Ruling and Senegal's Forfeited Win
The controversy stems from a match where Senegal initially secured a 1–0 win against Morocco. However, CAF's Appeal Board ruled that Senegal's walk-off in protest of a stoppage-time penalty violated Articles 82 and 84 of the competition regulations. Consequently, the match was recorded as a 3–0 forfeit in favor of Morocco, effectively handing them the AFCON 2025 hosting rights.
Rooney's Reaction: A Call for Fair Play
In a passionate statement, Rooney did not mince words, labeling the decision as "crazy." He emphasized that Senegal had rightfully won the match on the pitch, stating, "If I were a Moroccan player, I wouldn't accept it. Senegal beat them fair and square." Rooney reiterated his stance, asserting, "The Senegal team beat them fairly," highlighting his belief in the integrity of the original result.
Senegal Football Federation's Response and Legal Challenge
The Fédération Sénégalaise de Football (FSF) has strongly condemned CAF's decision, describing it as unfair, unprecedented, and unacceptable. In response, the federation has confirmed plans to challenge the ruling at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), seeking to overturn what they perceive as an unjust outcome.
This development adds to the ongoing debate about sports governance and fairness in international competitions, with high-profile figures like Rooney weighing in on the side of competitive integrity.
