Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has identified England, France, and Spain as his leading contenders to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Rooney Backs England Under Tuchel
The former England international believes the Three Lions have a strong chance under German coach Thomas Tuchel, who took over from Gareth Southgate in 2024. Southgate led England to consecutive UEFA European Championship finals, losing to Italy in 2021 and Spain in 2024.
Rooney also highlighted Spain and France as formidable opponents. He expressed hope that England can end their 60-year wait for World Cup glory, having last won the tournament in 1966.
Rooney's Statement
Speaking to UK Metro, Rooney said: "I think you have to look at Spain, France and England. I think they're probably favourites for this World Cup. I think England and Spain will make the final, and hopefully England win it."
France reached the 2022 World Cup final, losing to Argentina on penalties, while Spain enter the tournament as reigning European champions after defeating England in the 2024 final.
Coady Tips Senegal as Dark Horse
Former England international Conor Coady has named Senegal as a potential surprise package. He praised the Teranga Lions' performances at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and highlighted their quality under Sadio Mane.
Coady also tipped Germany, led by Julian Nagelsmann, to reach the latter stages of the tournament.
CAF President Sends Message to Senegal
CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe wrote a letter to the Senegalese Football Federation ahead of the World Cup, wishing them success in the tournament.
