Gueye Vows to Step Away from National Team
Senegal international Pape Gueye has declared that he will not play for his country again until the current technical staff is replaced, following the team's heartbreaking World Cup elimination. The midfielder made the announcement on his Instagram story shortly after Senegal's 3-2 extra-time defeat to Belgium in the last 32 on Wednesday, July 1.
Dramatic Collapse Against Belgium
Senegal had taken a commanding 2-0 lead but conceded two goals in the final five minutes of regulation time, forcing extra time. Aston Villa's Youri Tielemans then converted a penalty in the dying seconds to send the reigning Africa Cup of Nations champions home. Gueye, a 45-cap international who has been a regular since his debut in 2021, did not hold back in his criticism of the coaching staff.
Writing on Instagram, Gueye stated: "I'll be back to give you a few words regarding elimination... but I announce today that as long as it's this technical staff, I'll take a break from the selection."

Senegal coach Pape Thiaw attempted to explain the collapse, saying: "We had the match in hand, winning 2-0, and then we backed off a little towards the end; we wanted to hold onto the score. Once we conceded 2-1, we retreated even more and they scored their second goal. It wasn't easy; we tried to lift their spirits and bring more energy to the team. It's not easy because they gave it their all; we wanted to qualify for the people."
