Akor Adams Clarifies Super Eagles Leadership Structure
Super Eagles forward Akor Adams has provided crucial insight into the leadership hierarchy of Nigeria's senior national football team, confirming the roles of key players following recent captaincy changes.
New Captaincy Structure Confirmed
According to Adams, who plays for Sevilla, the Super Eagles now operate under a clear leadership structure with Wilfred Ndidi as captain, Victor Osimhen as first assistant captain, and Moses Simon as second assistant captain. This confirmation comes after coach Eric Chelle appointed Ndidi to lead the team following the retirements of Ahmed Musa and William Troost-Ekong.
The 26-year-old striker emphasized that Ndidi performed exceptionally well as captain during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where Nigeria secured a third-place finish. "Wilfred did an amazing job as captain, on the pitch and off the pitch," Adams stated. "Victor Osimhen as well, he is the second captain and Moses Simon as well."
Leadership Transition Details
The captaincy transition occurred before the 2025 AFCON tournament, with Troost-Ekong retiring after Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Troost-Ekong had been a stalwart for the national team, earning 83 caps over ten years and being named AFCON 2023's best player after scoring three goals during Nigeria's run to the final.
During the 2025 AFCON, Osimhen demonstrated his leadership role by wearing the captain's armband during Nigeria's third group stage match against Uganda. The Galatasaray forward has emerged as a key figure in the team's new leadership structure.
Ndidi Embraces Captaincy Responsibility
New captain Wilfred Ndidi acknowledged the significant responsibility that comes with leading the Super Eagles. The former Leicester City midfielder expressed confidence in the team's future under his leadership, stating, "It's a huge responsibility, and I think with the help of the players, everything will go smoothly."
Ndidi added that he has consulted with senior players to ensure a smooth transition, noting, "I've had conversations with a couple of players, particularly the senior players and I am made to understand that we also need the support of the staff."
Adams' Impact and Recognition
Akor Adams himself made significant contributions during the 2025 AFCON, reintroducing himself to international football with two goals and two assists. The Benue-born striker gained particular attention for his celebration during Nigeria's 2-0 victory against Algeria, which honored DR Congo superfan Michel Kuka Mboladinga, popularly known as 'Lumumba Vea.'
Following his impressive performances, Adams received recognition from his club Sevilla, which sent him a bold message after his strong showing against Athletic Club in La Liga on January 24. The Spanish club acknowledged his key role in Nigeria's AFCON campaign, where his contributions helped secure the team's third-place finish.
Complete Leadership Hierarchy
The confirmed Super Eagles leadership structure now includes:
- Captain: Wilfred Ndidi
- First Assistant Captain: Victor Osimhen
- Second Assistant Captain: Moses Simon
- Additional Leadership: Alex Iwobi follows in the hierarchy
This clarification from Adams provides transparency about the team's leadership following the departure of veteran players and establishes clear roles for Nigeria's current generation of football stars as they prepare for future international competitions.
