Team Laity Wins 2-1 in DLAM Anniversary Football Match

The 20th anniversary celebrations of the Diocese of Lagos Mainland (DLAM) culminated in an exciting novelty football match over the weekend, with Team Laity securing a 2-1 victory over a resilient Team Clergy. The match took place at CMS Grammar School in Bariga, Lagos.

Match Highlights

Team Clergy initially took the lead in the first half through a goal by Rev. Izuchukwu Obi, assisted by Rev. Canon Segun Oloju. However, Team Laity mounted a strong comeback in the second half, scoring two goals through Okey Odom and Akonam Obiefuna to clinch the win. The event was graced by top diocesan officials, including Bishop Akinpelu Johnson.

Anniversary Activities

The 20th anniversary celebrations began with a table tennis competition in April, with preliminary rounds (inter-Archdeaconry) held from May 2 to 9 at All Saints Church, Yaba. The grand finals of the table tennis event took place on May 16 at CMS Grammar School, Bariga. Additionally, the School/Young People’s (Girls and Boys Guild) celebration was held on Friday, June 12, at the same venue.

The novelty football match on June 13 was organized by the Christian Men’s Fellowship. Speaking after the match, Bishop Akinpelu Johnson emphasized the importance of the anniversary in fostering unity among diocesan members. He stated, "The spirit behind this 20th anniversary celebration is good because it afforded everyone an opportunity to come together, laugh, and share ideas on how to move our country forward." He urged all members to be their brother's keeper and commended the organizers for a successful event.

Earlier, the president of the Men’s Christian Fellowship (CMS), Henry Oranusi, expressed gratitude to all attendees. The secretary of the organizing committee, Anuoluapo Adeseso, thanked the members and players for their contributions to the well-attended match.

Adeseso also announced upcoming anniversary events: a Chorale concert (Classical Music) on Sunday, July 19, at the Cathedral Church of St Jude Ebute-Metta, Lagos; a Women Conference on July 24 at Archbishop Akinde Events Centre, Bariga; and a dinner/gala night/book launch on Friday, August 14, at Shell Hall Muson Centre, Onikan, Lagos.
