Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has confirmed that two key players will miss the remainder of the season as the Gunners prepare for a crucial Premier League encounter against West Ham United on Sunday, May 10.
Timber and Merino Ruled Out
Spanish coach Mikel Arteta revealed that defender Jurrien Timber and midfielder Mikel Merino are unlikely to feature again this season. According to the UK Standard, Arteta stated that both players will not be available for the match against West Ham.
"No chance for the weekend," Arteta said. "I don't know, there's still a fair bit to do, so everything has to be so smooth and quick if they want to have a chance to play any minutes."
Timber has been sidelined for nearly two months after being forced off during Arsenal's match against Everton in March. The full-back was present at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night as Arsenal defeated Atletico Madrid 2-1 on aggregate to secure a place in the UEFA Champions League final.
Merino has been out since undergoing foot surgery in early February and has been racing against time to recover before the season ends. His absence adds to Arsenal's midfield concerns.
Arteta's Squad Assessment
Speaking about the availability of other key players, Arteta emphasized the importance of squad depth. "Very important, it was to witness the quality that we had on the bench the other night. If you compare that to a year ago, that's a very different picture," he said.
"We have managed in the last week or so as well to have some more players fresher, and you could sense that as well. As I said from the beginning, that's the most important thing. If we have that, we have a bigger chance to achieve the goals," Arteta added, according to Arsenal's official website.
Fan Reactions
Arsenal fans have expressed their concerns over the injuries. @rise_dams commented: "Clear and honest, he's not rushing anyone back. Arsenal's focus is on finishing the job with the squad that's fit and ready."
@iamaqib14 wrote: "It's painful but okay. Timber has given a lot when White was not there. I really hope White gets in more rhythm and stays in form for the UCL final and the remaining Premier League matches. White gave his body for Arsenal; that's the least we can do for him to trust him."
@goldgooner added: "Timber is still limping unfortunately from the video on Tuesday night."
Title Race Implications
Arsenal currently lead the Premier League table with 76 points, five points ahead of second-placed Manchester City. With only three games remaining, the Gunners need seven points to guarantee the title, regardless of City's results. The West Ham match is a crucial step in their title pursuit.
