VAR Recording Reveals Referee Confusion in West Ham vs Arsenal Disallowed Goal
VAR Audio Shows Referee Confusion Over West Ham Goal Disallowal

The Premier League has released recordings from match officials' microphones and VAR communications following controversies in matchweek 36. One of the most debated incidents occurred during Arsenal's crucial 1-0 victory over relegation-threatened West Ham United.

Controversial Disallowed Goal

Leandro Trossard opened the scoring for Arsenal in the 83rd minute. West Ham thought they had equalized through Callum Wilson late in the game, but the goal was disallowed after a lengthy VAR review lasting four minutes and 17 replays. Referee Chris Kavanagh initially awarded the goal before overturning his decision.

Howard Webb Defends Decision

PGMOL chief Howard Webb, speaking on the Match Officials Mic'd Up program, explained that the decision was correct. "Is it a foul on the goalkeeper? Categorically yes. We've said all season that if a goalkeeper is impeded by an opponent grabbing or holding their arm, preventing them from doing their job, they will be penalized," Webb said.

He emphasized that the officials took extra time to ensure diligence out of respect for the game. However, many fans argue that the rule has been applied inconsistently throughout the season, a point that angered West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo.

VAR Audio Reveals Confusion

The released audio captured the conversation between Kavanagh and the VAR officials. Kavanagh appeared uncertain about what to look for and asked for guidance. Although he initially allowed the goal, he focused on checking whether Pablo Felipe fouled David Raya, even though he was directed to examine two other potential infractions.

He was instructed to check if Trossard pushed Pablo into Raya, if Declan Rice fouled Konstantinos Mavropanos, and another incident involving Gabriel Magalhaes. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta later praised the referee for his bravery, noting that the incident highlighted the difficulty of officiating.

Criticism from Victor Ikpeba

Former Super Eagles star Victor Ikpeba criticized VAR usage in England following the controversial decision. He claimed that VAR is failing in the Premier League and pointed out that Arsenal has committed similar offenses without being penalized.

The incident has sparked renewed debate about the consistency and effectiveness of VAR in English football.
