Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle has placed his future with the Nigerian national team squarely in the hands of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). This follows Nigeria's heartbreaking exit from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Contract Mandate and Semi-Final Heartbreak
Chelle, who was appointed in January 2025 on a two-year contract, had a clear objective from the NFF: to guide the Super Eagles to the final of the AFCON tournament. However, that mission ended in disappointment on Wednesday night in Rabat.
The Nigerian side was eliminated by the host nation, Morocco's Atlas Lions, following a dramatic 4–2 defeat in a penalty shootout after their semi-final clash ended in a stalemate. This result dashed the hopes of a nation eager to see its team compete for the continental title.
Chelle's Post-Match Statement and Uncertain Future
Despite the setback, the 48-year-old Malian-born coach expressed his desire to continue leading the three-time African champions. Addressing the media after the painful loss, Chelle was candid about the uncertainty surrounding his position.
"My future, I don't know for now," Chelle stated. "I am the coach of Nigeria at this moment, but it depends on whether the NFF want me to continue or not."
He emphasized that any decision would be made collectively after the tournament concludes. "The tournament is not over yet. After the AFCON, I will meet with the NFF and we will decide the next step," he added.
What Comes Next for the Super Eagles?
The immediate focus for the team will be the AFCON third-place playoff match. However, all eyes are now on the NFF's executive committee, which holds the key to Chelle's continuation. The federation must evaluate whether the team's performance under his brief tenure, culminating in a semi-final finish, meets their expectations.
The coming weeks will be crucial for Nigerian football, as the NFF's decision will set the course for the Super Eagles' preparations for future qualifying campaigns and the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
