Alex Iwobi Reflects on Super Eagles Journey Ahead of 100th Cap Against Portugal
Iwobi Reflects on Super Eagles Journey Before 100th Cap

Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi is on the verge of a major milestone as he prepares to earn his 100th international cap in the upcoming friendly against Portugal on June 10. The Fulham star has opened up about his journey with the Nigerian national team, expressing pride and gratitude for the opportunity to represent the country of his birth.

Iwobi, who was born in Nigeria and moved to England as a child, initially represented England at youth levels before switching his international allegiance to Nigeria in 2015. He has since become a consistent figure in the Super Eagles setup, featuring in four Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Emotional Reflection Ahead of Milestone

Speaking from the Super Eagles camp in Leiria, Portugal, Iwobi shared his thoughts on reaching the century mark. “I am proud to be where I am today; proud to wear the green-and-white. I am grateful to everyone, including the coach who called me up to the team for the first time. I have no regrets choosing Nigeria,” he told the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

The midfielder acknowledged the role of his father in his decision to represent Nigeria, noting that while his father offered guidance, he allowed Iwobi to make his own choice. “My father always told me to go out there and enjoy my football, and make the decision that I felt was good for me. He was part of the decision, but he didn’t force it down on me,” Iwobi added.

Iwobi’s 99th appearance came in a friendly against Jordan in March, a match that ended prematurely for him after he was sent off for reacting to an opponent’s provocation. He missed subsequent matches, including the Unity Cup and a friendly against Poland, but is now fit and ready to return for his landmark game.

Not Yet a Legend

Despite nearing 100 caps and being one of the most experienced players in the squad, Iwobi does not consider himself a legend of the Super Eagles. “After 10 years and eight months, I won’t say I am a legend; I only see myself as a Super Eagles player. It feels great to be looking at a 100th cap, and on a lighter note, I wish I could add another 100 caps. I have enjoyed my time with the Super Eagles,” he said.

Iwobi is set to become the fourth Nigerian player to reach 100 caps, joining the ranks of Ahmed Musa, Vincent Enyeama, and Joseph Yobo. His consistency and dedication have made him a key figure in the team, and his milestone is a testament to his longevity and commitment.

The friendly against Portugal will be a special occasion for Iwobi and the Super Eagles as they continue preparations for future competitions. Iwobi’s journey from representing England youth teams to becoming a centurion for Nigeria is a story of pride, heritage, and footballing passion.
