Former Arsenal goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has declared his excitement and readiness to make his senior debut for the Super Eagles after receiving his first call-up to the Nigerian national team for the upcoming Unity Cup in the United Kingdom.
Okonkwo Delighted After First Nigeria Invitation
The 24-year-old Wrexham goalkeeper, who previously represented England at youth levels, described the opportunity as a dream come true and emphasized his determination to secure a long-term place in the squad under head coach Eric Chelle.
“It’s an honour to even get the opportunity to play for your country,” Okonkwo told the Nigeria Football Federation. “I’m so excited; I can’t wait. I’ve been wanting this moment for quite a while now, and to have this opportunity is incredible.”
Okonkwo, a product of Arsenal’s Hale End academy, has been rewarded for his outstanding performances with Wrexham, where he has become a key figure in their push for promotion to the Premier League. He has made 121 appearances for the club, helping them secure two promotions, and this season alone he recorded nine clean sheets and 121 saves in 39 Championship matches.
Ready to Fight for Starting Role
The London-born goalkeeper made it clear that his ambition extends beyond just making his debut. “I want to become a consistent performer for the country. I want to be someone who they can trust in their goal for every game,” he said. “The process starts with integrating into the team, learning the way we play, connecting with my defenders, attackers, and everyone. I know it’s a process, but I want to work towards it and build that trust.”
Okonkwo’s arrival adds to an already competitive goalkeeping department. Stanley Nwabali, who was first-choice after the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, is currently without a club following his departure from Chippa United, raising concerns about his match fitness. Maduka Okoye has impressed with Udinese in Serie A, becoming the first Nigerian goalkeeper to record 10 or more clean sheets in a top-five European league since Vincent Enyeama in 2016. Francis Uzoho and Adebayo Adeleye also remain in contention.
Unity Cup Offers Fresh Opportunity
Okonkwo’s call-up comes as part of a broader strategy by coach Eric Chelle to evaluate several foreign-born Nigerian talents during the Unity Cup, which will also feature Zimbabwe, Jamaica, and India. The tournament serves as a key platform for assessing new options ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The Nigeria Football Federation has intensified efforts to attract dual-nationality players in recent months, aiming to strengthen the Super Eagles squad for future international competitions. Okonkwo is expected to battle for the number one spot alongside Nwabali, Okoye, and other contenders.
