Tennis legend Roger Federer has firmly shut down swirling rumours that he might step into a coaching role for Spanish sensation Carlos Alcaraz. The speculation began after Alcaraz, a six-time Grand Slam champion at just 22, split from his long-time coach Juan Carlos Ferrero in December 2025.
Federer's Firm 'No' to Coaching Role
In a clear statement to TNT, Federer left no room for doubt about his future plans. "No, I'm definitely out," the Swiss maestro declared. He explained that his current priorities lie firmly with his family and personal life, making a full-time coaching commitment impossible. "Maybe I could give him some advice on the periphery, but everybody knows I'm too busy with my children and with my life at the minute," Federer added.
High Praise for Alcaraz's Talent
Despite ruling himself out, Federer was full of admiration for the young Spaniard's extraordinary abilities. He believes Alcaraz possesses such a high level of skill that he can succeed with or without a formal coach. "I think he can get it with a coach, with no coach. He's that good, obviously," Federer stated. However, he was quick to acknowledge that the right guidance remains invaluable, especially during a transitional period. "But a good coach will definitely be helping," he noted.
Federer also highlighted the unique pressures Alcaraz faces following his split from Ferrero and the intense media scrutiny that comes with it. "It's going to be very important for him to find the right person in his corner," Federer advised. He expressed awe at Alcaraz's achievements, saying, "To be able to hit the career Grand Slam already at such a young age is incredible, to be honest." Samuel Lopez is currently overseeing Alcaraz's preparations for the first major tournament of the 2026 season.
Season Preview: Alcaraz, Sinner, and Djokovic in Focus
Looking ahead to the upcoming tennis season, Federer identified the key men to watch. He placed Carlos Alcaraz and Italian star Jannik Sinner at the top of the list of favourites. Not forgetting the enduring champion, Federer also tipped Novak Djokovic to remain a serious threat. "Let's see if he can do it. I think Sinner is obviously the other big favourite, and I believe Novak will have a good shot as well," he said. Federer concluded by sharing his excitement for the year ahead: "I'm very excited to see what's going to happen."
