Fortune Football Academy Crowned Champions in Inaugural Nathaniel Idowu-Ajegunle U-14 League
In a dramatic conclusion to the maiden Nathaniel Idowu-Ajegunle U-14 Football League, Fortune Football Academy emerged victorious by defeating Strong Dove 3-2 via a penalty shootout. The thrilling final took place at the Nathaniel Idowu Football Pitch in Oregie, Ajegunle, over the weekend, marking a significant milestone in grassroots football development.
Vibrant Atmosphere and Community Support
The one-day Super 4 finals transformed the venue into a carnival of youth sport, featuring two semifinals, an All-Star exhibition match, a third-place playoff, and the pulsating championship decider. An electric crowd, including drumming and dancing from the Authentic Nigeria Football and Allied Sports Supporters Club led by Prince Abayomi Ogunjimi, created an atmosphere reminiscent of a Super Eagles matchday. Ogunjimi praised the organisers, the Ajeromi-Ifelodun Sports Council under McAnthony Anaelechukwu, for their professionalism and commitment to youth development, while also commending Yemi Idowu's ongoing investment in grassroots initiatives.
Path to the Final and Key Performances
Fortune FA stormed into the final with a dominant 5-2 victory over Pure Talent FA in the semifinals, highlighted by a blistering first-half hat-trick from Adebayo Lateef and a brace from Odeshola Odunayo. In contrast, the second semifinal between Strong Dove FA and their opponent ended goalless, with Strong Dove prevailing 4-2 in a tense penalty shootout to secure their spot in the final.
The All-Star game provided entertainment and rest for the finalists, while the event also celebrated inclusion with 150 girls from the "Let Her Play Project" receiving certificates, food packs, and cash gifts. This gesture underscored the Nathaniel Idowu Foundation's commitment to promoting both boys and girls in sports.
Thrilling Final and Award Ceremony
In the championship match, Strong Dove FA took an early lead through Tejumola Boluwatife, but Fortune FA equalised via Markson Victor. With the sides inseparable at full time, the title was decided by penalties. Fortune FA held their nerve to win 3-2, with Odunayo converting the decisive kick to seal the glory.
For their triumph, Fortune FA lifted the giant trophy and received N500,000 in prize money, with each player awarded N5,000. Strong Dove FA earned N300,000 for their runner-up finish, while Ajegunle United SC claimed bronze and N150,000 after Solomon James scored a brace, including a strike hailed as the goal of the season. Pure Talent FA received N75,000 for fourth place, and the fifth and sixth-placed teams were also recognised for their efforts.
Future Prospects and Season Wrap-Up
The league, bankrolled by the Nathaniel Idowu Foundation, will culminate next month at the New Maracana Sports Complex in Tolu, where the Best 11 and individual award winners will be unveiled. This event highlights the growing emphasis on youth sports development in Nigeria, fostering talent and community engagement through structured competitions.
