FG Launches YouthCred: Nigerian Youths Can Now Borrow Up to N5 Million
Nigerian Youths Can Borrow Up to N5 Million via FG's YouthCred

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially launched a groundbreaking financial initiative aimed at empowering the nation's younger population. Dubbed YouthCred, this new credit scheme enables Nigerian youths between the ages of 18 and 39 to secure loans of up to N5 million to address various personal and entrepreneurial needs.

Who is Eligible for the YouthCred Loan Scheme?

The programme, which is being administered through the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP), has a broad target audience. It is designed to cater to over 400,000 young Nigerians across different walks of life. Eligible applicants include young professionals employed in either the public or private sector, budding entrepreneurs running their own businesses, and members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). The primary goal is to provide a formal and responsible credit alternative, helping youths build a credit history while steering them away from unregulated digital lenders and loan sharks.

Loan Terms, Benefits, and How to Apply

The loan structure under YouthCred is notably flexible and user-friendly. Borrowers can access amounts ranging from as low as N5,000 to a maximum of N5 million. Repayment plans are equally adaptable, spanning from 1 to 12 months, and are tailored to the borrower's category. The government has backed the scheme to ensure interest rates remain low and affordable.

For salaried youth and NYSC corps members, repayments can be conveniently deducted directly from their monthly salaries or allowances. Young business owners, on the other hand, can structure their repayments according to their business's cash flow cycles, reducing financial pressure. A standout feature of the scheme is that it requires no collateral or guarantors, significantly lowering the barrier to entry.

CREDICORP has developed tailored products within the YouthCred umbrella:

  • Corper Credit: Short-term loans specifically for NYSC members.
  • YouthCred Card: A flexible credit solution for young working professionals.
  • Youth Entrepreneurs Credit: Support designed to help young business owners expand their operations.

The application process is fully digital and streamlined. Interested youths can visit the dedicated YouthCred website, complete a short online form, and get verified within minutes. Once approved, funds are disbursed directly into the applicant's bank account. The scheme encourages responsible borrowing by allowing diligent borrowers who repay on time and complete financial literacy modules to increase their loan limits over time.

Related Development: FG Trains Content Creators on Tax Law

In a related move to boost financial literacy and compliance, the Federal Government has also announced an expansion of a special tax training program for content creators. Following overwhelming interest, the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reform, chaired by Taiwo Oyedele, has increased the number of participants to 50. This training is designed to equip creators with the knowledge to accurately educate the public on the new tax laws.

The launch of YouthCred marks a significant step by the government to directly address the financial inclusion and empowerment of Nigerian youths, providing them with the tools to enhance their productivity and economic participation.
