The Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) has taken a decisive step towards modernising its operations with the launch of a targeted three-day capacity-building initiative. The programme, inaugurated by the Commission's Director General and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Abdullahi Mustapha, in Abuja on Tuesday, 17 December 2025, is designed to revolutionise how the agency processes and disseminates critical energy information.
Driving the Federal Government's Digital Agenda
Dr. Mustapha emphasised that the training is a direct response to the need for robust information and communication technology (ICT) systems. He stated that effective delivery of the ECN's mandate as Nigeria's central hub for energy policy data requires cutting-edge digital tools. The initiative is firmly aligned with the Federal Government's broader e-government drive, which seeks to integrate all ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) into a cohesive national digital framework.
This national effort is coordinated by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) in partnership with CISCO. By participating, the ECN aims to boost inter-agency service delivery and contribute significantly to the country's digital transformation objectives under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
Building a Core of IT Champions
A key strategy of the programme is the creation of a network of "IT champions" across the Commission. Dr. Mustapha disclosed that selected staff from various departments are being trained alongside core ICT personnel. These champions will serve as first-line technical support within their units, assisting colleagues with basic troubleshooting, analysing departmental data, and facilitating communication with the central ICT department.
The training focuses on enhancing several critical ICT platforms, including:
- The Commission's websites and portals
- Local area networks and internet connectivity
- Advanced computer systems and software applications
Dr. Mustapha stressed that in the fast-paced 21st century, continuous upgrades to both hardware and software, coupled with regular staff training, are non-negotiable for institutional efficiency and competitiveness.
Consolidating Investments for a Digital Future
The Director General noted that the Commission has already laid essential groundwork for this transformation. Key enablers such as improved power supply, upgraded IT infrastructure, new software solutions, and enhanced internet access are in place. The current training programme is seen as the vital step to consolidate these investments and ensure they yield maximum benefit.
During the opening ceremony, Dr. Mustapha also launched several newly acquired advanced technology products. He urged all participants to engage actively, share experiences, and build collaborative partnerships that would drive the successful implementation of the Commission's digital agenda.
In his welcome address, the ECN's Director of Information Communication Technology, Engr. Stephen Adebayo, outlined the programme's goals. He said it was designed to strengthen staff technical competence, refine data management processes, and align the Commission's systems with global best practices in digital governance.
Engr. Adebayo added that the training would equip staff with modern tools for evidence-based decision-making and enhance operational transparency. He reaffirmed the ICT Department's commitment to providing continuous support and innovative solutions, calling for collective ownership and collaboration among all staff to ensure the long-term success of the digital transformation journey.
