Lafarge Trains 100 Persons with Disabilities in Lagos

In a significant move towards fostering an inclusive economy, Lafarge Africa Plc has honoured participants of its pioneering Disability-to-Ability (D2A) programme in Lagos. The event, timed to coincide with the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, brought together key partners including the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF), the Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development, the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA), and renowned chess champion Tunde Onakoya.

Building Skills for Sustainable Livelihoods

Themed "Ability Reimagined," the D2A initiative is strategically designed to equip 100 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) with practical, market-ready vocational skills. The programme focuses on four high-demand trades: laptop and phone repairs, make-up and gele styling, wig and braids making, and shoe and bag making. To ensure wide accessibility, training is conducted across two dedicated hubs in Ikeja (Lagos West) and Ikorodu (Lagos East).

Speaking at the ceremony, Viola Graham-Douglas, Director of Communications, Public Affairs & Sustainable Development at Lafarge Africa Plc, framed the initiative as a core part of the company's mission. "We don't just produce building solutions; we build society, homes, and empower people to be the best that they possibly can be," she stated. She emphasized that the programme extends beyond technical training to include crucial modules on entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and mentorship, coordinated by LSETF.

Partners Champion Inclusion and Self-Belief

Programme partner and Guinness World Record holder, Tunde Onakoya, inspired attendees by sharing his personal journey. He recounted how chess and education became his passport to global opportunities, urging the beneficiaries to fully embrace the chance provided by Lafarge. He charged them to believe in themselves and diligently hone their skills to make a positive impact.

The event also featured a speed mentoring session involving the Executive Secretary/CEO of LSETF, Feyisayo Alayande. Representing the General Manager of LASODA, Dr. Adekola Oluwafunmilayo highlighted the collective responsibility of building an inclusive society. "The responsibility does not lie with the government alone," she noted, praising the Lafarge and LSETF partnership for its impactful approach.

A Foundation for Entrepreneurial Success

A critical component of the programme's sustainability plan is the provision of starter toolkits and support for business registration upon completion of the training. This practical step is designed to ensure beneficiaries can launch their entrepreneurial ventures with immediate effect and confidence.

LASODA's representative commended this thoughtful support, stating it "truly transforms lives." The D2A programme stands as a concrete example of how corporate-public partnerships can create real opportunities, moving beyond policy to tangible empowerment and fostering long-term self-reliance for Persons with Disabilities in Lagos State.
