Nigeria's automotive assembly landscape is witnessing a significant shift as Chisco Transport Limited, a prominent road transport and logistics company, has officially inaugurated its local vehicle assembly facility in Lagos. This strategic move positions Chisco as a formidable competitor to established manufacturers like Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing, while advancing the nation's objectives of local production, job creation, and sustainable fleet management.
New Assembly Plant and Initial Vehicle Rollout
The newly commissioned assembly plant, located in Iponri, Surulere, Lagos, is accredited to assemble Yutong luxury buses and Sinotruk heavy-duty trucks. According to reports, the facility is also equipped to handle other leading Chinese commercial vehicle brands, enhancing its versatility in the market.
As part of its launch strategy, Chisco has announced the deployment of 80 luxury buses and 40 trucks under a new transport franchise called Drive-To-Own. These vehicles are set to begin operations immediately, connecting key routes such as the South-East to Northern Nigeria and servicing the premium Lagos–Accra West Coast corridor. The initiative aims to ensure continuous fleet renewal, operational efficiency, and an improved passenger experience.
Drive-To-Own Model and Economic Impact
The Drive-To-Own model represents an innovative approach to transportation in Nigeria. Under this scheme, carefully screened and trained captains are assigned buses and trucks to operate under agreed terms, creating a pathway to vehicle ownership while maintaining strict service standards. To ensure operational reliability, Yutong has pledged 24-hour technical support for the luxury buses. A delegation led by Mr. Damian Lee assured Chisco and its franchise captains of round-the-clock after-sales assistance, faster spare parts supply, and continuous maintenance training.

The 53-seater Yutong luxury buses come equipped with premium features, including full air conditioning, plush seating, phone charging ports, and onboard entertainment screens. The Sinotruk trucks feature modern facilities, such as bed spaces for long-haul captains, enhancing comfort and efficiency.
