Anambra Land Crisis: Armed Men, Govt Officials Accused of Illegal Takeover in Oze
Crisis Over Alleged Illegal Land Takeover in Anambra

A serious conflict is unfolding in the rapidly developing commercial area of Oze, within Nkwelle-Ezunaka, Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State. The crisis stems from allegations that armed individuals, with the support of certain government officials, are intimidating landowners and forcibly taking control of disputed parcels of land.

Invasion Sparks Protest and Petitions

According to reports, the invasion, which is said to have official backing, led to the destruction of perimeter fences. This act has sown fear, confusion, and deep distress among the local residents. In response, community members staged a spontaneous protest, calling for immediate government action to stop what they label as an illegal and forceful land takeover.

Key stakeholders from the area have now sent a petition to Governor Chukwuma Soludo, highlighting the escalating tension in Omalima Layout, Oze Nkwelle-Ezunaka. The petition, authored by the Concerned Residents of Omalima Layout with support from community leaders and civil rights advocates, directly challenges the alleged collusion between government officials and private interests.

Residents Lament Destruction, Journalist Attacked

A prominent stakeholder, the estate chairman who identified himself as Chief Moses, condemned the vandalism that also affected his property. He expressed sorrow over the intimidation faced by residents who, he insists, acquired their lands legally and possess valid documents. "Our people are crying; they are crying over the fact that their houses and fences have been destroyed," Moses stated. "We bought this land legally and have all our documents intact. We are begging the state government to come to our rescue."

The situation grew more alarming when a journalist from Pechilly Media, an online television news portal, was attacked while visiting the crisis site. The assailants justified their actions by claiming they were under orders "not to allow anyone" into the disputed zone, denying they were violating press freedom.

One affected landowner, Chidi, gave an emotional account, revealing that even the property of All Saints Anglican Church in the area was demolished. He decried the use of the government's name to dispossess law-abiding citizens, calling the act both cruel and unjust.

Appeal for Governor Soludo's Intervention

The petition to the governor makes a series of urgent appeals. It reads in part: "Your Excellency, the people of Omalima Layout are not questioning your commitment to justice, due process and the rule of law... Rather, they are appealing to you to intervene swiftly to prevent further breakdown of law and order."

The document outlines specific demands for the state government:

  • An immediate and independent investigation into the alleged invasion and destruction.
  • Identification and accountability for any individuals or officials found acting outside the law.
  • Verification of land ownership through proper legal channels.
  • Protection for residents, journalists, and religious institutions.
  • Restoration of peace to the community.

The petition warns that failure to act promptly could escalate tensions, undermine public trust, and tarnish the administration's image of transparency and accountability. It concludes with a plea for Governor Soludo's leadership to bring clarity, justice, and lasting peace to Oze Nkwelle-Ezunaka, reaffirming that no one is above the law.
