Imam Warns Hajj Pilgrims: Content Creation Wastes Money

Prominent Nigerian Imam Issues Stern Warning to Hajj Pilgrims Over Content Creation

In a powerful sermon delivered on Friday, April 3, 2026, the Chief Imam of the University of Ibadan Muslim Community, Professor Ibrahim Uthman, has issued a strong caution to Nigerian Hajj pilgrims. He warned against turning the sacred sites of Hajj, such as the Ka'abah, into scenes for content creation or skit-making, emphasizing that such actions constitute a sheer waste of money and time.

Hajj as Serious Worship, Not Entertainment

Professor Uthman stressed that Hajj is a profound act of worship and one of the pillars of Islam, not an opportunity for entertainment. During his special Jumu'ah Khutubah, aimed at preparing the Muslim community for the upcoming Hajj exercise, he reiterated that pilgrims must maintain consciousness of Allah throughout the rituals. He stated that anyone who preoccupies themselves with creating social media content during Hajj has essentially wasted the financial and temporal resources invested in the pilgrimage.

Conditions and Etiquettes of Hajj

The Imam highlighted the essential conditions for performing Hajj, including being a Muslim and having the physical and financial capacity. He emphasized that only those who utilize lawful earnings and fulfill their religious obligations, such as prayers, can truly reap the rewards of Hajj. Professor Uthman criticized practices like neglecting prayers or focusing on superficial displays, such as getting golden teeth to signify completion of Hajj, as contrary to the essence of the pilgrimage, which is to return to a pure and natural state of devotion.

He further explained that the symbols of Allah, including the Ka'abah, are meant for reflection and worship, not for content creation. According to him, standing before the Ka'abah to make skits or videos for audiences back in Nigeria undermines the spiritual purpose of Hajj and wastes the significant sums, often reaching millions of naira, spent on the journey.

Call for Spiritual Consciousness

Professor Uthman called on intending pilgrims to be mindful of the lessons embedded in the Hajj exercise, urging them to imbibe these teachings for personal and communal growth. He reminded the faithful that the heart where consciousness of Allah resides is known only to Allah, and maintaining a clean, devoted heart is crucial during the pilgrimage.

Background on NAHCON Leadership Change

In related news, Professor Sheikh Abdullahi Saleh Usman, the Chairman and CEO of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), resigned from his position effective February 9, 2026. He submitted his resignation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, citing personal reasons after careful reflection and family consultation. Professor Usman clarified that his decision was not due to dissatisfaction with NAHCON or the federal government.

This warning from Professor Uthman comes at a critical time as Nigerian Muslims prepare for the 2026 Hajj season, highlighting ongoing concerns about the intersection of modern technology and traditional religious practices.
