MURIC Accuses Northern Christian Leaders of Hypocrisy, Calls for Sincerity
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has leveled serious accusations of hypocrisy and insincerity against some northern Christian leaders, urging them to align their actions with their public calls for unity. In a strongly worded statement issued on Thursday, 2 April 2026, the organization expressed deep skepticism toward recent goodwill messages from Christian figures, describing them as contradictory to their alleged behind-the-scenes activities.
Questioning Motives Behind Unity Calls
MURIC's northern wing coordinator and Kano State chairman, Hassan Sani Indabawa, specifically responded to remarks made by Joseph John Hayab, chairman of the Forum of Northern Christians (FNC), who had called for mutual respect, understanding, and love between Muslims and Christians during Eid-el-Fitr celebrations. While acknowledging the message, MURIC dismissed it as "hypocritical" and questioned the underlying motives, alleging that some Christian leaders have engaged in actions that directly contradict such unity appeals.
The organization pointed to what it called a pattern of duplicitous behavior: "It is perplexing to note that while northern Christians urge unity in the day, they write petitions to the United States in the night," the statement asserted, claiming that certain Christian figures have promoted narratives of religious persecution internationally. MURIC further alleged that these leaders have previously accused the Nigerian government of failing to protect Christians and sought foreign intervention based on what it termed "false narratives" of genocide.
Allegations of Double Standards and Lack of Transparency
The group raised additional concerns about transparency and consistency in interfaith engagements. According to the statement, some northern Christian leaders have declined joint meetings with international delegations, opting instead for separate sessions that MURIC suggests undermine collaborative efforts. MURIC also criticized what it described as "double standards" in condemning violence, alleging that some Christian leaders are quick to speak out when Christians are victims but remain conspicuously silent when Muslims are affected. "These actions have contributed significantly to distrust between religious groups and undermined efforts at promoting interfaith harmony," the statement emphasized.
Contrasting Grassroots Coexistence with Leadership Conflicts
Despite its sharp criticism of religious leadership, MURIC acknowledged that ordinary Muslims and Christians in many northern communities continue to coexist peacefully, demonstrating tolerance and neighborliness in their daily interactions. The organization highlighted that minority Christians living in Muslim-majority states across the North enjoy relative peace and access to their rights, while alleging that minority Muslims in some regions face discrimination and violence.
The statement referenced comments by other Christian clerics, including Ezekiel Bwede Dachomo, accusing them of making inflammatory statements and calling for foreign intervention in Nigeria's internal affairs. MURIC described such actions as unpatriotic and warned that inviting external forces could compromise national sovereignty and security. "Portraying Nigeria's security challenges as purely religious is misleading," the group insisted, noting that insecurity in the country is complex and affects all groups regardless of faith.

MURIC called on Christian leaders, particularly within the Forum of Northern Christians, to address internal issues and demonstrate greater accountability. "As equal stakeholders in the Nigerian project, we must all genuinely work towards living in peace and mutual respect," the statement urged, emphasizing the need for sincerity, patriotism, and integrity in religious engagements.
The organization concluded by urging the FNC to "put its house in order" and ensure that its members' actions align with their public statements.
