Former Deeper Life Member Reveals Beard Policy Led to Church Departure

A former member of the Deeper Life Bible Church has publicly shared the specific circumstances that prompted his decision to leave the congregation, citing the church's strict grooming regulations for youth leaders as the primary reason for his departure. Ebenezer Mefo, who served as a youth leader and choir master, detailed how a mandate to shave his beard completely became a non-negotiable condition for continuing his service roles.

Strict Grooming Directive from Leadership

Mefo explained that the directive was communicated to him by his youth coordinator, who stated that church guidelines required all youth workers to remain clean-shaven. According to Mefo, the instruction was directly linked to guidance from the church's senior leadership, including Pastor W.F. Kumuyi, the founder of Deeper Life Bible Church. "You can't serve in the realm of Choir Master with beard," Mefo recalled being told. "Pastor Kumuyi had instructed every youth worker or leader must be all shaven, that they must absolutely go on skin cut chin shaving."

Personal Struggle with the Requirement

The former member revealed that he began growing facial hair at a very young age, making the strict shaving requirement particularly challenging to maintain. "I grew beard at a very tender stage, at 16," Mefo stated. "I'm hairy, I'm super bearded, I grow beards in less than 5 days and I don't really like shaving to the extent the clipper gotta have a contact with my skin." He attempted to explain his situation to church leaders, noting that frequent shaving affected his skin and caused discomfort, but his request for accommodation was not granted.

Decision to Step Away from Church Role

Mefo described how both his youth coordinator and pastor stood firmly by the grooming rule, leaving him with a difficult choice: either comply fully with the requirement or step down from his positions. Ultimately, he chose to leave his roles and subsequently departed from the church. He noted that his parents, who were also members of the congregation, supported his decision despite their own involvement with the church.

Call for Understanding in Religious Institutions

While acknowledging the right of religious organizations to establish internal standards, Mefo emphasized that institutions should demonstrate understanding in certain situations. "While all these rules might be good and they map a church spheres of influence, operation and identity, a few times, we should learn to be 'Understanding,'" he stated. Reflecting on his experience, Mefo urged religious institutions to consider individual circumstances when applying rules and encouraged men not to feel pressured to alter their natural appearance solely to meet social expectations.

Broader Implications and Online Discussions

Mefo's account has sparked significant discussions online about grooming standards within religious institutions and the balance between organizational discipline and personal expression. "Beards are part of Men. God gave a Man beard," Mefo remarked, adding that frequent shaving could lead to skin irritation and other issues. The Deeper Life Bible Church, founded in 1973 by Pastor W.F. Kumuyi, has been known for decades for its strict doctrinal stance and conservative approach to Christian worship and lifestyle, consistently projecting itself as separate from what it describes as 'worldly practices'.
