Benin Queen and Others Risk Expulsion Over Influencer Peller’s Unauthorised Palace Visit
The Benin Traditional Council has issued a stern warning that a queen residing in the palace of the Oba of Benin may face expulsion due to an incident involving social media influencer Habeeb Hamzat Adelaja, widely known as Peller. In a formal statement released by its Secretary, Frank Irabor, the council condemned the event as a "serious breach of protocol and desecration of the sacred precincts of the Palace."
Unauthorised Access and Breach of Peace
According to the council, Peller gained entry to the palace on March 6, 2026, during his nationwide tour, without obtaining the necessary approval. The statement elaborated: "Mr Adelaja and his entourage entered the palace without the requisite permission… and their subsequent conduct caused significant embarrassment and a breach of the peace within the palace grounds." The council emphasised the profound significance of the palace, stating: "The palace is not a public thoroughfare or a location for frivolous content creation; it is the ancient and spiritual seat of the Oba of Benin."
Disciplinary Actions Taken
Following a preliminary investigation, the council confirmed that disciplinary measures have already been implemented against those involved. A chief associated with the incident has been suspended indefinitely, while a palace staff member, identified as Mr Omuemu, has been detained by the Nigeria Police Force and charged in court for allegedly facilitating the unauthorised entry.
The council also disclosed that a queen who appeared in the incident is undergoing disciplinary proceedings that could result in her removal from the palace. It stated: "In accordance with Benin traditions and customs, these proceedings may result in her removal from the palace."
Peller's Non-Compliance and Legal Warnings
Furthermore, the council confirmed that Peller has been invited to appear before a committee of chiefs to explain his actions but has failed to comply. "Mr Adelaja has failed to honour this invitation… He must tender an unreserved written apology to the palace for his unauthorised access and the embarrassment caused," the statement added. The council warned that failure to comply could lead to legal action, noting that law enforcement agencies have been notified.
Commitment to Protecting Traditions
Reaffirming its authority, the council asserted its dedication to safeguarding the traditions of the Benin Kingdom under Oba Ewuare II. "While unscrupulous elements may attempt to undermine our sacred institutions… they do so at their peril," the council stated, adding that it possesses the capacity to address such violations and prevent future occurrences.
