Nigeria Gears Up for 2026 Hajj with Comprehensive State-Level Preparations

With less than four weeks remaining before the commencement of airlifting Nigerian pilgrims to Saudi Arabia for the 2026 Hajj, a flurry of activities is underway at the offices and camps of Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Boards across the country, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. These efforts, encompassing facility inspections, enlightenment lectures, medical screenings, and inoculations, are meticulously designed to ensure the comfort, safety, and spiritual enrichment of all pilgrims embarking on this sacred journey.

State-Specific Initiatives and Appeals for Efficiency

In Kano State, the Pilgrims Welfare Board has made a formal appeal to the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) to prevent any delays in the airlift of intending pilgrims. Abubakar Matawalle, the Director General of the Board, emphasized the critical importance of timely airlift for a seamless pilgrimage experience. He stated that all necessary arrangements have been finalized and urged NAHCON to ensure efficient coordination with airlines to avoid any inconveniences.

During an official visit by a NAHCON delegation, Muhammad Bin Usman, the Commissioner for the North-West, explained that the team was in Kano to assess the facilities provided for pilgrims. Similar inspections are being conducted across states in the region to verify readiness for the Hajj exercise. Ahmad Kalgo, the NAHCON Zonal Director for Kano, commended the board for its high level of preparedness and organization, encouraging the continuation of sensitization programs, particularly in Hajj induction.

Readiness Assessments and Infrastructure Improvements

In Imo State, Hajia Aishat Obi, the Commissioner representing the South-East at NAHCON, led a team to evaluate the readiness of the Hajj Camp and the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport. After a thorough inspection, the team expressed satisfaction, noting that Imo State exceeded the minimum requirements set by the Commission in all aspects. Hajia Obi praised Governor Hope Uzodinma for his efforts in enhancing airport facilities, which now allow residents to fly directly to international destinations without needing to travel from other states. She highlighted that these improvements benefit all citizens, regardless of religion or ethnicity.

Spiritual and Logistical Training Programs

Osun State is currently running a two-week enlightenment program for intending pilgrims, designed to equip them with the spiritual, physical, and logistical knowledge required for a successful Hajj. Abdul Maruf Ishola, Chairman of the Board and Amirul Hajj, urged pilgrims to view the opportunity as a divine privilege, emphasizing early spiritual preparation, such as seeking forgiveness and resolving disputes. He stressed that patience is essential for achieving Hajj Mabrur and cautioned against misleading first-timers, urging adherence to official guidelines.

Muritala Fakunle, the Board Secretary, charged pilgrims to act as worthy ambassadors of the state and comply fully with the training, noting that attendance is compulsory for all intending pilgrims to ensure the success of the Hajj exercise.

Progress in Visa Approvals and Distribution of Essentials

Edo State has announced the approval of visas for intending pilgrims, a significant milestone in the preparations. Musa Uduimoh, Chairman of the Board, described this as steady progress toward a successful pilgrimage, with plans to commence medical screenings and comprehensive sensitization programs soon.

In Kebbi State, Governor Nasir Idris flagged off the distribution of uniforms and travel bags to intending pilgrims at the Kauran Gwandu Hajj Camp in Birnin Kebbi. Faruku Aliyu Yaro, Executive Chairman of the Kebbi State Pilgrims Welfare Agency, stated that this initiative aims to ensure proper coordination and comfort for pilgrims, reflecting the government's commitment to a smooth Hajj operation. Governor Idris urged pilgrims to reciprocate by conducting themselves responsibly and offering prayers for peace and development.
