Leadership Trainers Urge Young Nigerians to Build Character Skills

Leadership trainers in Nigeria have issued a strong call for young Nigerians to focus on building character and acquiring practical skills as essential tools for personal and national development. This appeal was made during a recent mentorship and leadership workshop organized by the Nigerian Leadership Initiative (NLI) in Abuja.

Emphasis on Character and Practical Skills

Speaking at the event, a lead trainer, Mr. Adewale Adeyemo, stressed that character and skills are the bedrock of effective leadership. He noted that many young people are chasing certificates without developing the integrity and competence required to lead. According to him, “Character is what defines a leader when no one is watching, and skills are what enable them to deliver results.” The workshop attracted over 200 young participants from various states across Nigeria.

Mentorship as a Catalyst

Another trainer, Mrs. Funmi Ogunlade, highlighted the importance of mentorship in shaping the next generation of leaders. She pointed out that mentors provide guidance, accountability, and real-world insights that cannot be learned in classrooms. “Mentorship bridges the gap between theory and practice. It helps young people navigate challenges and make informed decisions,” she said. The NLI plans to expand its mentorship program to reach at least 10,000 young Nigerians by 2025.

Call for Self-Discipline and Continuous Learning

The trainers also urged participants to embrace self-discipline and continuous learning. They noted that the rapidly changing global economy demands adaptability and innovation. A participant, 22-year-old Emmanuel Okonkwo, shared his experience: “I learned that leadership is not about titles but about influence and service. I am motivated to work on my character and learn new skills.”

Impact on National Development

The event concluded with a call for stakeholders, including government and private sector, to invest more in youth leadership development. The trainers argued that a generation of principled and skilled young leaders is critical to solving Nigeria’s challenges. “We cannot expect different results if we keep doing the same things. It is time to prioritize character and skills in our education and training systems,” Adeyemo added.
