Nigerian music icon Davido has once again demonstrated his high-risk appetite, this time placing a substantial wager on the outcome of the Super Eagles' opening match at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025.
The High-Stakes Bet Slip
The singer took to his official X (formerly Twitter) account to share evidence of his bold gamble. His bet is not on a simple Nigeria win, but on a specific 'Both Teams to Score' (BTTS) market for the Group C clash against Tanzania.
If both the Super Eagles and the Taifa Stars find the back of the net during the match, Davido stands to pocket a staggering $96,564, which is roughly equivalent to 140 million Nigerian Naira.
A History of Sporting Bets
This is not the Afrobeats star's first foray into sports betting. Earlier in the year, Davido famously lost a $10,000 wager placed on Nigeria's crucial World Cup playoff match against Gabon. That gamble ended in disappointment following an unfavourable result for the national team.
The upcoming match marks the beginning of Nigeria's campaign to secure a historic fourth AFCON title. The fixture is scheduled for Monday, December 23, at the Complex Sportif de Fes in Morocco.
Davido's AFCON Concert Performance
Beyond the betting slip, Davido has already made his mark on the tournament's festivities. On Saturday, December 20, he headlined the official AFCON Morocco '25 Kick-Off concert.
The event, held at the Olm Souissi Fan Zone in Rabat, saw Davido representing Nigeria on a global stage. He thrilled the crowd with a performance of his hit songs, sharing the spotlight with other artists like French Montana and Moroccan singer Douaa Lahyaoui.
Mixed Reactions from Netizens
The revelation of Davido's bet sparked a flurry of reactions from Nigerians on social media. While some questioned his choice, others saw it as harmless entertainment.
@drpenking commented, "The fact that you didn’t play Nigeria to win means that you don’t believe in your country." Another user, @Winco_HP, expressed concern about the influence on fans, stating, "You no even Sabi wetin u bet. Once you don collect money for gif, u no longer have the interest of your fans. Misleading people to gamble away their money."
However, some reacted with humour. @MR_CRYPTO150 noted, "So OBO too na gambler. Then I think it's like am not quitting soon since my mentor also approves it."
All eyes will now be on the pitch in Fes, as Davido and countless Nigerian fans await to see if the Super Eagles' performance will bring a musical payoff worth millions.
