Almost three years after the death of Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, his body remains unburied. His father, Joseph Aloba, has insisted that a DNA test must be conducted before any burial can take place, prolonging the family feud over the late artist's remains.
Father Demands DNA Test Before Burial
In a recent statement, Joseph Aloba reiterated that he will not allow his son to be buried until a DNA test is performed to determine the paternity of Mohbad’s son, Liam. The dispute stems from allegations that Mohbad's wife, Wunmi, may have been unfaithful, which the family claims must be resolved before the final rites.
“I am not against my son’s burial, but I want the truth to come out first. A DNA test will confirm if Liam is truly my grandson. Until then, Mohbad will not be buried,” Aloba said.

The delay has sparked widespread criticism and concern among fans and legal experts. Under Nigerian law, a DNA test can be requested by a family member, but it cannot indefinitely prevent burial. Cultural norms also emphasize timely burial, typically within days of death. Mohbad died on September 12, 2023, under controversial circumstances, and his body has been in a morgue since then.
Legal analyst Chidi Oguamanam noted, “While the father has a right to seek paternity clarification, the prolonged detention of the body raises public health and dignity issues. The court may need to intervene to compel burial.”

The Aloba family has been divided over the issue. Some relatives support the father’s demand, while others call for immediate burial to honor the late singer. Mohbad’s mother has reportedly pleaded for her son to be laid to rest, but Joseph Aloba remains adamant.

The late singer’s fans have expressed outrage on social media, with many calling for a court order to force burial. A petition circulating online has garnered thousands of signatures demanding action.

“This is a tragic situation compounded by grief and mistrust. The priority should be giving Mohbad a dignified burial, but the father’s insistence on DNA has created a deadlock,” said sociologist Dr. Funmi Adewale.
